We all love (and most of us don’t abuse) dogs.

Trump does, but even GOPers tend to like them - maybe because dogs don't judge.

and at the bottom of a family hierarchy.

Also, Republicans are fear driven, so having a living alarm system that will bark and alert them to prowlers, fires, or other untoward events is comforting (Democrats like that part about dogs, too. The neighbors, not so much).

Other people keep them trained as hunting dogs, even if they never hunt.

Rural people need them to help herd animals and to raise a fuss if a predator shows up.

And for some Republicans, the dog is their best pal, Republicans are human, after all, no matter how much stupid shit they've been told and firmly believe.

Some just hate dogs who don't do whay they're told (notwithstanding that, without proper training, they have no idea what they are being told to do.)

I'd guess even a majority of Republicans like animals. And, someone from DU was posting recently about how in rural areas of the country it's not a big deal to shoot your dog. Having said that, I still think a majority of people would be sickened by what she did....

But even they have evolved. They don't shoot a troublesome dog unless it's a last resort in a dire emergency. A dog who kills someone's chickens? Even they will try to find a new home for the dog or taking it to a shelter rather than executing it.

Gratuitously killing a healthy dog simply rubs American voters the wrong way. Back in WW2, the Republicans tried to make points by criticizing FDR for having had a battle ship return to port where his dog, Fala, had been left by mistake. The Republicans thought the voters would react badly to turning the ship around, instead the voters rallied around FDR for retrieving his dog.

Frankly, the statistics show that more Americans shoot their wives than shoot their dogs.

Noem could have, obviously, put the dog up for adoption, found a new home for the dog, or even made better efforts to train this dog to hunt.
