Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) took aim at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again on Sunday, saying that Israels actions in Gaza are ethnic cleansing. Sanders reiterated his familiar call on CNNs State of the Union on Sunday to hold Netanyahu responsible for Israels actions in Gaza, pointing to the staggering death toll and the displacement of Palestinians in the region. He was asked to respond to the ongoing pro-Palestinian protests that have broken out on college campuses across the country and to Rep. Ilhan Omars (D-Minn.) remarks last week when visiting Columbia University.
What I think the essential point that Ilhan made is that we do not want to see antisemitism in this country. And I think the word genocide is something that is being determined by the International Court of Justice, he said. But just as what I will say: I dont think theres any doubt that what Netanyahu is doing now displacing 80% of the population in Gaza is ethnic cleansing. Thats what it is. Pushing out huge numbers of people, he added.
Omar visited Columbias campus last week, where the national spotlight has focused on the hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered there. CNN played a clip of her comments on the ongoing protests on State of the Union on Sunday. I think it is really unfortunate that people dont care about the fact that all Jewish kids should be kept safe and that we should not have to tolerate antisemitism or bigotry for all Jewish students, whether they are pro-genocide or anti-genocide, she said.
Sanders has repeatedly criticized Netanyahu for the ongoing war in Gaza and has opposed more U.S. funding to Israel. He also re-upped his calls for an end to U.S. funding to Israels actions in Gaza. And now were looking at the possibility of an attack on Rafah, where people have gone to as a so-called safety zone. So, whats going on there, again, to my mind, is outrageous. And as youve indicated, I strongly oppose U.S. funding for Netanyahus war machine, he added.

(13,205 posts)If you warn the people you are not against (non-combatant Gazans in this case) to leave an area, isn't that different in some way from telling the people you are against to leave an area? The latter is "ethnic cleansing." The former just isn't.
I'm 100% behind Israel's right to defend itself against current and future threats (as I've made clear). I consider the attack by Hamas on Oct. 7th an attack against Israel, the United States, and humanity.
Netanyahu is a worthless asshole in my book. I still remember his manipulations of U.S. politics in the Trump years. He's bad for Israel and the United States. I'm against playing into his hands all the time by using ineffective rhetorical maneuvers. Using the phrases "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing" against Israel is music to Netanyahu's ears. It's a rhetorical foul and foolish at best.

(523 posts)Bernie Sanders has demonstrably debunked the reichtwing montra that American Jews have a secret alligience to Israel and will support Israel even against American interests.
But it must be pointed out, Hamas has dominated Gaza for 17 years. In those 17 years, rockets and missiles were fired into Israel from apartment buildings, churches, mosques, schools, even hospitals. No Gaza structure has remained innocent of being used to launch artillary into Israel. And Oct. 7th was clearly a declaration of war by Gaza. Even now Gaza could stop the fighting by surrendering, but instead it continues to fire on Israel.

(5,009 posts)And before it starts, I have no love for Hamas. They suck and need to not be the ruling government in Palestine. But Hamas isn't paying the price for this. For sure the leaders of Hamas aren't. It is innocent people that are paying the price. And Israel seems to not be letting up until there are no more Palestinians.
