(2,207 posts)I now firmly believe that all campus protests should be ended by hundreds of armed police dragging them away tightly bound in zip-ties because they are clearly a massive threat to with all their disruption of commencement preparations and the potential of scaring away donors.

(2,207 posts)Because of you I now think that if there's ever another large protest of war in, say SE Asia, or anywhere, for that matter. Well, then the National Guard should be sent out, line up, aim their rifles and open fire on those miserable miscreants. It'll be their fault when we see them lying there on the bloody ground for upsetting the studious calm of campus life!

(59 posts)they actually meant it.
This is absolutely going to anger all of the student body who elected the protestors to represent them in this.

(8,767 posts)Speaking out. Only the party line is approved.
We are worried about a dictatorship and and losing our rights.
Appears it's already started and people are cheering.

(2,619 posts)Re-framing the issue that way doesn't hold water.
It is private property and students were intimidated.
The message is not the issue - the behavior is.
1st amendment rights end at private property.
I have the right to kick you out of my house if I don't like what you're saying.
Would you support a vocal group of white students demanding that people of color could not enter their space. Would it be appropriate for those white students to intimidate black students?
Wait.... maybe the message has something to do with it after all.

(8,767 posts)Protest are always going to have bad actors, chaos agents even people that are there to create trouble with the express intentions of getting a protest shut down with force.
Colleges and universities are supposed to be the epicenter of social change and upheaval.
This is an affront to freedom and democracy and nothing will convince me otherwise.
All I can say that Republicans are watching and this anti-protest rhetoric will come back to haunt all of us when Republicans make their push to further crush democracy.

(8,767 posts)Do you think Kent State protestors should have complied with authorities to avoid that situation?
That was protesting on a college campus.

Banning student protest is absolutely a dagger into the heart of democracy.
Stopping protest because you don't agree with them is something Republicans do, not Democrats.
People want "civilized" protest that only last a couple of hours and doesn't inconvenience anybody.
That just isn't how protests work.

(8,767 posts)I didn't see how what I've said is that controversial.
Crushing protests like this is absolutely antidemocratic and antithetical to what we, as a nation, claim is our values.
I appreciate the fact we don't agree and that's ok. That's what makes a democracy stronger.

(61,849 posts)Private universities asking students to stop disturbing other students is not the end of the world. The protests are counter-productive, anyway. Let's not pretend they're some kind of heroic effort. It's a bunch of entitled rich kids banging pots and pans and yelling at other students. Very childish.
