SHERIDAN, Ind. (AP) U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz, the first and only Ukrainian-born member of Congress, emerged early on as a natural advocate for supporting her native country in its war with Russia. But when $61 billion in additional support for the war effort came up for a vote in the House recently, she voted against it.
Instead she has called for better oversight of U.S. funds and opposed giving blank checks to the Ukrainian cause. She says U.S. border security should be a bigger priority.
That puts her more in line with conservative House Republicans and more notably with voters in her deeply conservative central Indiana congressional district. She's locked in a tough reelection fight in the May 7 GOP primary, made all the more complicated by her public announcement more than a year ago that she wouldn't seek another term, a decision she later reversed.
The aid package, part of a larger bill that also included assistance for Israel, Taiwan and other global hot spots, was approved by the House on April 20, the Senate on Tuesday and signed into law by President Joe Biden on Wednesday.

(24,900 posts)I infer that she is a Republican, but why isn't that an important fact in this story? Puts a different perspective on the story, IMHO.

(48,650 posts)We think she must be a Dem.
Who is not voting with the other Dems.
She must think there is something so wrong with the bill even a Ukrainian Dem can't vote for it.
If we knew she was an R, we would understand immediately.
And would not be surprised at all the she is selling out her own country of origin.

OAITW r.2.0
(24,900 posts)"Green Mountain" coffee at 1/2 the price, but still, $4 bucks is $4 bucks. You could probably get a 2 day old croissant with the coffee and pocket the change.

I pass by a DD every now and then but never stopped there.
Next time I will go in and get a cup of coffee.
Sounds like a fun stop.

Then they interviewed her. And she's a complete nut-job. She claims Zelensky and Biden are "corrupt" and "idiots". She's spreading the Putin disinformation. And tries to claim it's nothing to do with getting primaried. Or that she's changed her position.

(87,090 posts)Born in Ukraine, that is all. It assumes that because she was born there that she's automatically pro Ukraine of today. Many ruzzians and ruzzian patriots were born there. People come here for many reasons. Maybe she's part of a sleeper cell, you know?
That she's currently an R, is telling. I just think she wasn't really Ukrainian Ukrainian at any point int time.

She may have been born in Ukraine, but her family historically might well be ethnic Russians, and owed much of their relative prosperity in Ukraine to the old Soviet resettlement policy.

(995 posts)Victoria Spartz (born Viktoria Kul'heyko) was born in Nosivka, in what is Chernihiv Oblast in northern Ukraine. There is a significant minority of Russians and Belarusians there in the northern districts. There are many Ukrainians, particularly the older ones, who were under communism/socialism, but yet when the Soviet Union collapsed, it ended up being very difficult post-independence to find work because during Soviet times, there were a lot of them. Ukrainian culture was suppressed for a long time and it's only recently within the last decade or so that Ukraine really asserted itself as being independent of Russia. But again, Ukraine has been divided linguistically between Ukrainian and Russian for a long time, particularly in Crimea and eastern Ukraine, even despite the fact that most of the people of eastern Ukraine voted for Ukraine to be independent. Even now, politically, there are big divisions within Ukraine, although it doesn't seem like it right now. But again, since she is in Indiana, it isn't surprising that she would follow the GOP playbook.
