The WA GOP put it in writing that they're not into democracy

The WA GOP put it in writing that they’re not into democracy
“We are devolving into a democracy, because congressmen and senators are elected by the same pool,” was how one GOP delegate put it to the convention. “We do not want to be a democracy.”
Then they kicked it up a notch. They passed a resolution calling on people to please stop using the word “democracy.”

“We encourage Republicans to substitute the words ‘republic’ and ‘republicanism’ where previously they have used the word ‘democracy,’ ” the resolution says. “Every time the word ‘democracy’ is used favorably it serves to promote the principles of the Democratic Party, the principles of which we ardently oppose.”

Just saw on Maddow, she rocks. These people are straight out crazy.

We cant be a democracy because of our parties name The Democratic party so we must be a republic because republicans!! Of course they say this not having a clue that there are different types of republics and one of those different types is a democratic republic as opposed to a Confederal republics a Federal republics or even a Islamic republic. The words racists and haters and promoters of ignorance the principles of the GOP are served.

WE ARE ARDENTLY OPPOSED TO DEMOCRACY. Compliments of your local GOP Klavern.

A question for English pros. Is “ardently opposed” an oxymoron? I’m suggesting that ardently is usually used as an adverb in a positive sense.

Doublespeak. Newspeak. Doublespeak. I read the novel as a young kid but these days, the similarities are too frightening and I’m watching it in my lifetime

For both parties. Call the Deomcratic party the Liberal party and Republicans can b e called the Dinosaur party. Both names would be accurate.

The Soviet Union was a republic, North Korea is a republic. All the term "republic" means is that you don't have a hereditary head of state (monarchy).

and then read a history of the US.

We decided a long time ago through bitter experience in Europe that monarchy and theocracy were rotten ways to run a country, not to mention lousy for 99% of the people to have to endure living under. They came up with a less democratic system than we have now, but our system now is not pure democracy, either. We elect representation and if a party has become radicalized and extremist and gets tossed out on its ass until they rethink things, so be it.

I suggest that any Republicans who long for a rigidly hierarchical society with a supreme leader at the top decamp for Russia, China, or North Korea. The first, at least, is desperate to import a few good men.

9. We are actually a Constitutional Democratic Republic.

We were more of a Republic when the nation was founded, but several amendments to the Constitution moved us more into the realm of a Democratic Republic.
For example, the 17th Amendment calls for the direct election of Senators, and, the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote.
Also, the 14th Amendment grants citizenship to all people born in the United States, and the 15th Amendment insures that the right to vote can't be denied or abridged by virtue of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
So, we have a Constitution that can, and has been, amended by a defined process. And that Constitution allows for majority rule with minority rights.
We get to vote, but most of the time it isn't a direct process; our elected representatives make the laws that govern the nation. But there are direct ballot initiatives that can result in changes to the law at the state level.

So, as my daughter the lawyer tells me, we are actually a Constitutional Democratic Republic.

Republic - we vote for people who vote for us

Democracy - we have direct elections and the people decide

Years ago, my NH brother told me how they had direct elections for such things as the town budget where all voters got to decide what was funded by their town rather than the elected town officials. He said that sometimes it was kind of a zoo because people would be arguing on how much went to e.g. the Police Department and how much went to each of the other funded area but that he enjoyed it because it gave everyone got a chance to argue their point before voting.

that the US is not a democracy but a Republic: "When the founding fathers used the word Republic, what they meant is what we now call a Representative Democracy.

"It's technally true that we are not a democracy as the word was used in Greece, direct democracy, every citizen votes on every issue always. But even in the 1770s, can you imagine what would never get done because it took to long to get votes on every single tiny detail from every single citizen? And today -even though we have the internet, and might be able to colect the votes timely, counting them is a different story. Direct democracy can only work for an entity the size of a small city, preferably one in which those who are allowed to vote have no day jobs. And that isn't really democratic at all.

Almost always they shut up after my first paragraph. Occasionally I have to go into the second. I've never had to finish it before they do shut up.
