Protesters at Columbia University have barricaded themselves inside an academic building on the upper Manhattan schools campus, breaking windows and allegedly holding workers there hostage before releasing them, the Columbia Spectator student newspaper reports.
Doors to Hamilton Hall are shut and blocked with tables, chairs, metal barricades and other objects or are shuttered with locks, zip ties or ropes by dozens of protesters who broke into the building, the paper reports. Dozens more protesters rally outside, forming a human chain to block the doors and chanting From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free and Palestine will live forever.

The news media kept referring to terrorists in Iran grabbing and holding hostages as "students."
According to conservative estimates, less than HALF of these people arrested at these protests are actually students.
I'm not going to call them "outside agitators," but they are just bored young adults stirring up trouble for shits and giggles.

I think that quite a few of the protesters say that they are being treated unfairly because they want to gain sympathy for their cause by creating a martyrdom image. "We suffer in solidarity with Palestinians."

Palestinian from Gaza City
Protests are spreading across the United States at college campuses, where university students are gathering in the name of Palestinian rights and occupying campus spaces with tents. Sadly, not everyone who purports to support Palestinians is truly interested in safeguarding our rights.
It pains me to say this as a Palestinian from Gaza. As my home is destroyed and too many killed, I never thought I would find myself criticizing those speaking up. And yet, I cannot be silent about what I am seeing. The truth is that the manner in which many gather to voice their support for Palestinians does more to hurt our cause than help it.
You know what would help the Palestinians in Gaza? Condemning Hamas' atrocities. Instead, the protesters routinely chant their desire to "Globalize the Intifada." Apparently they do not realize that the Intifadas were disastrous for both Palestinians and Israelis, just as October 7 has been devastating for the people of Gaza.
They should be speaking up for the innocent victims of Hamasboth Palestinian and Israeli. Instead, they endorse Hamas's ideology with posters announcing resistance "by any means necessary" and chants of "from the river to the sea," effectively glorifying the Al-Qassam brigades, Hamas' military wing, whose ideology is entirely based on the elimination of more than 6 million Israelis from the land

Do you KNOW any actual current college students- because I do, and they are mostly supportive of what's happening. They are either 1. True believers 2. Are fans of anarchy and chaos, especially if it can be turned into a TikTok or 3. Are desperate for a cause or movement to join to feel connected in this completely disconnected society.
We already know who some of the leaders are, and their socialist, anti-white, anti-government bonafides are confirmed. Other students are following these students because they are charismatic and have successfully mastered control of mob rule. https://www.cnn.com/business/live-news/university-protests-palestine-04-27-24/h_9269b1c4fe62ac3ef265154b1f2c456c

(3,290 posts)Any students simply blocking access to the building should face arrest and the appropriate charges and then suspension from Columbia. Any faculty doing the same should face the same charges and termination from the university.
Any students inside the hall should face arrest and the appropriate charges and then expulsion from Columbia. Any faculty inside the hall, same as above.
This is beyond ridiculous.
Another tactic that would be amusing would be to set up cell phone jammers outside the hall so the revolution can't be broadcast. Clear out the media from the vicinity of Hamilton Hall. Provide food and water. Keep emergency responders nearby in case of any medical emergencies amongst the revolutionaries. Otherwise, let them sit there with no media outlet, social or otherwise, and see how long it takes them to have an absolute screaming hissy fit.
I'm betting half an hour, an hour tops.

(21,854 posts)and the protests should fizzle.
But, I'm concerned that, in order to force attention back on themselves, they would escalate to a worse level of violence.
Jedi Guy
(3,290 posts)Allow them power and food/water, of course, but jam cell phone data transmission and cut any internet lines to the building. Keep the media away by putting up a perimeter.
With no audience for their morality play, they'll break within hours. After all, if they can't display how wonderful and virtuous they are, what's the point?
wnylib
(21,854 posts)Would they physically hurt (but not kill) someone in the building and push them out through a first floor window with a note listing their demands and a threat of worse to follow if their demands were not met?
Would they be fanatically extreme enough to set part of the building on fire?
Jedi Guy
(3,290 posts)It's not really a serious suggestion, anyway. I just think it'd be funny watching them have a total meltdown when they realize their performance isn't reaching an audience.
I'd like to think Columbia would show some spine and simply ask NYPD to go in and solve the problem, but alas, if that request hasn't come yet it's probably not going to. Odds are they're going to negotiate with them, or try to, and then NYPD will go in afterward. Columbia might as well cut to the chase.
But all joking aside, any students blocking access to the building should be suspended for a minimum of one semester. Any students inside the building should be expelled. Any faculty involved in either should have their employment with the university ended on the spot. All of the above should be arrested and charged and have their day in court for any crimes they've committed.
Failure to apply consequences to these spoiled children will only encourage them to act out in more and more extreme ways. They're already bleating about amnesty, and the answer to that should be...
wnylib
(21,854 posts)we're not real. I have also thought along the lines of denying them media access so that they fizzle out.
But, the suggestions were similar to the psychological model of behaviorism. I was flowing the behaviorist principle that, when ignored, behavior initially escalates in reaction to being ignored.
The standoff will end sometime. I suspect that the protesters hope for an ending that they can dramatize to fit their projected martyrdom image.
Jedi Guy
(3,290 posts)Oh, more than likely. NYPD going in after them is what they want. They want to draw the parallels between themselves and the Palestinians and NYPD and the IDF. The glorious revolution will be on TikTok for everyone to see.
I don't know, maybe just ignoring them really is the best path forward. Give them the old silent treatment and let the wheels fall off.

I also believe the good-faith protesters are being manipulated by outside interests that are more interested in exploiting chaos, any chaos, that can be purchased. Chaos has been the signature move of Moscow the past dozen years or so, and like an auteur's film, this has a deep Cyrillic odor to it.
After Moscow's Foreign Intelligence Service took over the management of the late Prigozhin's Internet Research Agency (the troll farm in St Petersburg where the phrase "I hope I'm wrong, but..." became profitable), it's not difficult for me to imagine rubles going to pay down loans for a handful of influential leaders, posters, and/or protesters.
And if this is indeed, what's happening (or in part), then I gotta think that FIS has mastered the art of exploiting and enlarging otherwise much less consequential national divisions into spicy recipes for a stew of national crises.
