Mona Charen - No one will be insulated from the ravages of a second Trump term.

IN DECEMBER 2022, DONALD TRUMP said something that, in a healthy political culture, would have spelled his doom. Referring to his lie that the 2020 election was stolen, he wrote, “A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution. Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!”

All rules, regulations, and articles must be terminated for his sake. That is not the language of populism, that is aspiring despotism. The Constitution itself must be cashiered if it stands in the way of his ego and his power. There it is, in black and white, Trump’s direct assault on the foundation of the republic.

And how many Republicans announced after this that they could no longer in good conscience support Trump? How many went on record promising, as Liz Cheney did a year later, that they would do everything in their power to ensure that he never came near the Oval Office again? I counted one. John Bolton, Trump’s former national security advisor, said the post was “disqualifying” and that all GOP candidates should issue “Shermanesque” statements to that effect. A few other Republicans mildly disagreed, but didn’t go so far as to say that trashing the Constitution was beyond the pale.

I cannot fathom why the news doesn't point this out at every opportunity.

2. I had a nightmare dream last night that Trump had won the election.

In my dream, he was sworn in and then gave an inauguration speech promising revenge and his regular claptrap. He then went to the Oval Office for a televised news announcement and said, “The government of the United States is hereby dissolved. As I speak, heads of the military are being removed. The military will be led by General Michael Flynn. All other government agencies will be phased out except for the IRS. Members of Congress and the Supreme Court may to home. Their services will not be needed. Democratic leaders are being arrested and will be punished for their illegal prosecutions. Martial law is now in effect. I am now your sole leaders as I alone can fix this country.”

I don’t remember all those exact words except for the first sentence and the military part, just the gist of his plan to be dictator. Thankfully, I woke up but I was a long time getting back to sleep. If dreams reflect our fears, I seem to have a pretty big one!

11. The question is what would you do if something like that happened?

I expect the economy would tank overnight. There would be a run on banks. I also suspect that there would be quite a bit of violence as protestors took to the street. And that would just be the start.

Over time, turn into failed state, but I see a country primed to take just take it, our third knowing full well what is coming, their third thinking it is incredible and the "middle" third oblivious.

I’ve been reading about Democrats in especially vulnerable groups buying guns and planning to use them if they are rounded up as Trump is planning to do.

“If they come for me, I am taking them down with me.”

Also, i’ve seen women “joking” about using arsenic on abusive husbands since Project 2025 wants to ban no-fault divorce. I do think it will lead to abusive husbands being killed by various methods.

American women are far too strong-minded to accept what the Heritage psychos want.

There was a recent cyberattack on the Heritage Foundation website. . . it’s giving people ideas.

This is why we need to work HARD to win this election. To prevent terrifying scenarios like this.

...but cynicism won't let me. Maybe you both are correct?

But as long as there is cheap alcohol and "90 Day Fiance", I think a majority of Americans will just shrug...

It sucks to know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

There is so much disinformation being put out today, and many voters just do not know all the good things Biden has accomplished. Fox News is still the most-watched cable channel, and they reach a lot of voters. MSNBC and CNN seem to be tied at second and third in most polls, and neither seems to focus on the administration’s positive policies and improvements versus Trump’s trials and things like inflation.

And they will steal every penny of S.S./Medicare funds, the FDIC, federal employee pensions, etc., and they won't stop there. I wonder how Jamie Dimon will feel when the dictator's goon squad shows up and makes him sign over everything he owns. They can do that you know.

there have been Republicans who understood what putting an authoritarian Strong Leader in control of their party had the potential to do to democracy in the US.
In 2015 there was talk of having a brokered convention to pick another candidate. But the Republicans knew that because Trump was so wildly popular with 80% of their base they could not win without him. So they put party before country and chose Trump. Even then some Republicans refused to support their own party's nominee. This refusal is very unusual for Republicans.
There were periodic weak attempts by individual politicians to break with Trump, and some individual politicians decided not to run again. But the great majority knew that their political power derives from the authoritarian base.
After the Epiphany Day failed coup there was a brief period in which it seemed that enough Republicans might stand up and say the quiet part out loud, "authoritarianism has endangered democracy in the US". But that period quickly passed. This Republican party does not have what is needed to save democracy in the US.
For a democracy to be functional there must be at least two viable political parties committed to democracy. Now, the US only has one. Unless and until the right wing develops a new, viable party committed to democracy, democracy in the US will be one election away from failure.
