Alabama state Sen. Shadrack McGill said that increasing teacher pay is against "a biblical principle" because it might attract people who otherwise wouldn't do the job.
"Teachers need to make the money that they need to make," McGill said, according to the Times-Journal. "If you double a teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to teach ... and these teachers that are called to teach, regardless of the pay scale, they would teach. It's just in them to do. It's the ability that God give 'em."
McGill's comments came at a prayer breakfast this week in Fort Payne, Ala. State legislators are currently weighing raising teacher pay. One GOP leader proposed raising salaries of newer teachers by 2.5 percent, but critics argue that it isn't fair to longer-serving educators, according to the Montgomery Advertiser.

(3,660 posts)I wonder how much money this state senator earns. I mean shouldn't we also cut the amount of money that politicians are paid. I mean after all raising the pay for politicians could attract people that want actually govern and instead sit on their paycheck and continuously campaign to keep there job. I mean I am sure that many people are drawn by god to serve in politics, they should get a very meager salary as well.

He has an entire fleet of aircraft including several jets. He has an 18,000 sq foot lake front mansion.

(12,977 posts)Obviously, with the bloated salaries they get, the positions are attracting people who aren't fit for the job. We should reduce CEO salaries to something like entry level teachers' pay and see how much our economy improves as a result.

I agree with the DUer who stated that paying politicians very little is also Biblical.
