Via Think Progress: Anti-Abortion Komen Vice President Pushed For Split From Planned Parenthood
http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/02/02/417161/karen-handel-komen-planned-parenthood-split/
UPDATE: Without actually mentioning Planned Parenthood, Komen founder Nancy Brinker says in a new video that Komens actions have been mischaracterized. We will never bow to political pressure We will never turn our backs on the women who need us the most, she adds.
Really? On edit, have to say that's it's unbelievable how hard the organization is trying to cover this appalling misstep. The first excuse given was that Planned Parenthood was under investigation by Congress.

Updated to add, this via The Atlantic: Top Susan G. Komen Official Resigned Over Planned Parenthood Cave-In
Update: Mollie Williams, the Komen official who resigned to protest the organization's decision to de-fund Planned Parenthood, just sent me this statement, which I am reprinting in full:
However, anyone who knows me personally would tell you that I am an advocate for women's health. I have dedicated my career to fighting for the rights of the marginalized and underserved. And I believe it would be a mistake for any organization to bow to political pressure and compromise its mission.
I have deep admiration for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the millions of women who benefit from Komen's work. It was an honor to oversee and expand their public health efforts during my six years there. At the same time, I respect the work of Planned Parenthood, including their lifesaving efforts to detect cancer in its earliest stages.
The divide between these two very important organizations saddens me. I am hopeful their passionate and courageous leaders, Nancy Brinker and Cecile Richards, can swiftly resolve this conflict in a manner that benefits the women they both serve.

(26,624 posts)Ambassador to Hungary
Brinker served as United States Ambassador to Hungary from September 2001 to 2003 during the administration of President George W. Bush.[24] A political appointee,[25] she advanced a broad range of U.S. security and economic interests.[26] Specific successes include expanded security cooperation, development of a closure strategy for the Hungarian Fund, resolving commerce transparency issues, and for the first time, holding a conference on the trafficking and exploitation of workers that Health Ministers from the neighboring Balkan States attended. She also raised awareness about breast cancer among Hungarian women by leading a march over the historic Chain Bridge in Budapest. The bridge was illuminated in pink for the occasion.[27]
While ambassador, Brinker began to collect Hungarian art. Today, her collection spans 100 years, from just before the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the present and has been on display at several museums around the United States. The collection is one of the largest outside of Hungary.[28][29][30][31] The Nancy G. Brinker Collection extends and complements the acknowledged masters of Hungarian modernism and has introduced the American audience to original artists of more modest reputation.[32]
Hungarian President Ferenc Mádl decorated Brinker with the Order of Merit, Medium Class, Cross Adorned with Star, for her work in advancing bilateral relations and in recognition of her charity activities.[33][34]
[edit]Other government service
On December 24, 2008, President Bush appointed her to the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for a six-year term.[35]
In 2000, she served on the National Steering Committee for the National Dialogue on Cancer.
Vice President Dan Quayle invited her to chair a subcommittee monitoring research, progress and development in the fight against breast cancer.
In 1990, President George H. W. Bush appointed her to chair the President's Cancer Panel and to monitor the progress of the National Cancer Program.
In 1986, President Ronald Reagan appointed her to the National Cancer Advisory Board.

(51,813 posts)As far as I'm concerned, they defrauded me when they got me to donate $100 last summer to Koman for breast cancer research; I had no idea they had just cut $12 Million in funding for embryonic stem cell research (I just read about it today in another DU thread) and had no idea they were about to defund Planned Parenthood. Betty Botox ain't fooling anyone anymore! Time for a class action fraud lawsuit by all of us who got had by SGK for the Cure!
