http://thinkprogress.org/green/2012/02/03/418141/romney-public-lands/Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney likes to sing about America the beautiful, but he mainly seems interested in mining it.
In an interview with the editorial board of the Reno Gazette-Journal last night, Mitt Romney expressed his ignorance of why the United States owns and manages approximately 80 percent of Nevadas land, most of it uninhabitable mountains and desert. In response to a question about whether he would sell public lands back to the state, Romney stated that that I havent studied it, what the purpose is of the land:

Yeah instead of having National Parks and Historical Landmarks Lets let corporations and Uber Rich get there greedy hands on it.
Hey Rommney small clue for you. Washington would rather his home-Mount Vernon- be open to the public than privately owned by you!

(22,172 posts)they don't know much else. Their entire life is consumed by their business matters. A country is not a business...someone needs to point that out to the former Bain capital guy.

I think most of it is used by the military.
And a lot of it is used for cattle grazing.
If he doesn't know that, he truly is an idiot.
I'm not all that smart, and I knew that!

(51,666 posts)purpose for public lands in the West, at least, is to provide virtually free grazing and hunting lands and mining claims for his friends. They certainly don't want to pay free market prices for that sort of thing.

(4,847 posts)to any foreign entity that's interested, any global corporation, right mittens? And after that, they can do what they damn well want to do, even if they pollute beyond the boundary, right mittens? Oh, and they can maybe keep some of the beautiful sites intact and charge a large fee for people to see it. Of course, that's certain people that the owners deem are worthy to come in, right mittens? So, it sounds like you want to sell off the commons to you're corporate friends, and how does that help the american people?

(2,208 posts)Sell the commons to the highest bidders.
That's what they want when they say "ownership society."
Every square inch of the planet should be owned by someone for profit.
That is their vision...

(36,281 posts)Just to clarify in the interest of accuracy, most of it is national forest, BLM land, and military reservations-- it's a distinction WITH a difference because those entities manage that land for vastly different purposes than the park service.

(121 posts)That is precisely why it's bad to have a businessman in the presidency -- or in any elected office.
Business looks for profit at the expense of anything else. At the expense of health, property, environment, anything else. Profit is the motive. Who cares if people get hurt? Start a war? Sure, if it makes us money!
Mitt (R)Money doesn't want to be president for the good of the country. It's just another opportunity to load us down with debt, file bankruptcy, carve us up into peices and sell them, making sure the fortunate few get the profit.
When he was governor of MA the state was 47th in job creation.
His Bain years are indicative of how he views the role of the executive.
