...and I really don't care how Progressively Incorrect it is for me to do so. Every year there are those who try to make me and others feel guilty because we get wrapped up in this sort of thing (or the World Series or the Oscars or the American Idol Finale or whathaveyou) on the grounds that "there are more important things to focus on." Which to me, is part of the appeal of sports--that they are fundamentally, beautifully irrelevant. Unlike a huge national election, if your sports team loses, you cry, get drunk, get over it, and wait for next year. There are no long-lasting consequences for our nation if the Patriots or Giants win tomorrow (no offense to fans, you know it's true), but it's fun to momentarily pretend there are.
Honestly, I'm not even that big of a football fan--I just like good food, beer, and the company of friends. Do I suspect that most of the people who rail the hardest against the Super Bowl are super-serious wet blankets who never get invited to these types of parties? No. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with having a raucous good time and forgetting about the big issues momentarily--at least, for one night.

(17,635 posts)you see, the "New York Giants" actually play in New Jersey.
I think New England wouldn't even claim New York.
So technically, both teams are NOT from New England.
(Go Patriots!)

(11,304 posts)my dad and brother and sisters and we watch together. I went a couple of times to friends homes and I just didn't like it because it was way to much distractions for me. But now I don't watch football anymore. It's all about the money. But you shouldn't worry what others think. Go have fun you are entitled to that your mind free for a couple of hours. Just don't drive and drink. I won't be watching so I really don't care who wins.

(51,076 posts)and I don't give a rats ass what anyone thinks about me for being who I am. Hell I didn't even start watching sports until I was grown and with a couple young stepsons playing ball.

(24,853 posts)I have a high-def projector and we watched it in my garage (meticulously cleaned of course) on a white sheet hanging inside of the garage door. The viewing area was about 8'x6'. The refreshments were in the house and an awesome time was had by all.
This year all I have to do is get the tequila.
I totally agree about the irrelevence of it all. That's the attraction of all sports for me, and I'm surprised so many don't get it. In the Game of Life the loser loses house, family, health, job, or life. In the Game of Sport, the loser loses face, and comes back to play again. Awesome escape.
And my pool #'s for tomorrow are NFC 7 - AFC 1, AFC 8 - NFC 4.
And... DAYTONA is only 22 days away WOOHOO!
And then? Spring Training in early March!

(32,103 posts)I didn't realize that Super Bowl parties were "Progressively Incorrect". I don't really like football, either. But, I watch for the commercials and the half time show. I don't get into the game, itself, unless Da Bears are playing.

So, I understand and I totally agree.
Hell, I would not have survived 2005 without some distraction from Bush and his "I have political capital, and I intend to spend it" bullshit while he waltzed around the country espousing the need to invest our Social Security trust funds in the stock market.
Yeah, like that was ever going to really happen.
Sometimes we need to be distracted for a while from watching the trainwreck that Bush caused in the world when he stole that election back in 2004.
