I am checking threads all up and down the GD and the Politics 2012 board and it really looks like the GOP has just gone insane. The stuff they are sending to the governor in Virginia, the candidates they are pushing forward, SGK, the police response to OWS...it's like what passes for conservatives in this country have gone rabid.
And is this a good thing or a bad thing for liberals/progressives??

(36,649 posts)Used by the GOP to advocate total victory in an unjust & idiotic war, oppose desegregation efforts, and which laid the groundwork for the corporate takeover of the US govt.
That was 48 yrs ago.

(41,832 posts)that our message gets through to voters. I just don't know about people anymore, especially those who don't vote in their own best interest.
They have always been COMPLETELY crazy. It's just that the 2010 elections, with the help of Citizens United, emboldened many of them. Also, such things as the election of a black Democratic President, and the recall of Snott Walker have made them desperate. So, they are now acting desperately.

It is bad to have a significant portion of the population buying into these sticky, stinking, droppings, but hopefully the hate will burn itself out the way segregation did.

(22,308 posts)With the economy turning the corner and President Obama likely to hold office they see their own downfall.
Reagan had three legs to his political stool (I think all their policies qualify as "stool" but that is a different story). He had the social leg, the economic leg and the security leg. We have gained major ground on both security and social issues. Now they are depending on the strength of their economic policies to support their party. The problem is that their economic policies have failed miserably. They can't admit that because then they need to admit that all the problems they caused are actually their fault. By the end of Pres. Obama's second term the economy will be far better than it was at the end of W's second term and we will have a very clear picture painted for the American voter. It isn't long until their party won't have a leg to stand on. and the smart ones know it (the crazies don't get it but that won't change anything).

(39,961 posts)Sane people realize the GOP has gone off the cliff. Even conservatives are pissed at them, particularly for inflicting Romney on everyone. It's rather delightful to see them trainwreck all over the place. I hope they continue to make a disaster out of their party and make themselves known as the party of fundamentalist crackpots.

(146,354 posts)it all falls apart around them. Here in Minnesota, the Republicans who took both houses of the legislature by narrow margins, are trying their damndest to pass as many reactionary and divisive things as possible in this year's short session. They know that they'll be out of control in November. As far as possible, they're trying to do things in the form of amendments to the state constitution. If the voters approve those things, the Democratic governor can't do anything about it. In most cases, those measures are likely to fail in November, though.
They know their time is short to be in control of the legislature, so they're trying to poison the well before getting tossed. I think it's the same all over the country. Good riddance to this bunch!

(50,130 posts)That was pretty crazy stuff, and heralded the new era of lies and use of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy to propagandize.

(37,573 posts)many people are still planning to vote GOP.
But it depends what you mean by crazy. Is it about personalities, statements, or policies?
Here's what Somerby said about the debates, which I find very instructive
"On and on the muddlemush went. Before the evening was done, Williams even pretended to ask about a couple of actual topics. But no one asked these ridiculous candidates to explain their tax proposals, which are simply insane.
Just look what these crackpots have proposed. No one bothered to ask!
Can we talk? In four debates in these two states, Romney and Gingrich were never asked to explain their insultingly crazy proposals. Crazys now part of the culture! They were asked about their tax returns, and about that contract with Freddie Mac. John King asked Gingrich about his three wives. But no one ever asked these stooges about their tax proposals.
Romneys proposals are bat-shit insane; your press corps prefers to talk about dogs. And they do enjoy a good pseudo-quotation."

As long as actual proposals are avoided, those candidates can talk about their own glorious pasts.

But the rest of your post was spot on!
