Just days after Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua died at the age of 88, officials in Montgomery County launch an investigation into the Catholic leader's death.
NBC10.com - Katy Zachry
The 88-year old Cardinal died on Jan. 31, a day after a judge found him competent to testify in the trial of a former aide.
That aide, Msgr. William Lynn, is accused of hiding predator priests by shuffling them from church to church. His trial is scheduled for next month. Bevilacqua wasn't charged in the case.
Church officials say the Cardinal was suffering from cancer and dementia.
Prosecutors want to make sure there was no foul play involved in Bevilacquas death, according to the Inquirer.

Remember....Bevilacqua's the Cardinal who utterly refused to have Catholic schools here in Philly celebrate MLK day, until so much pressure was put upon him, he had to relent.
We have a DA here in Philly, Seth Williams, who is really going after these guys...Here's a 2005 report that details Lynn's involvement. Remember, this guy was very close to the Cardinal, and was a personal friend.

This is the final report, released a year ago. Prosecutions ensue. This includes pursuit of the Church's role into the coverup and facilitation of child sexual abuse.

Bevilacqua died in Montgomery County, PA so the death is being investigated by our coroner, Dr. Walter I. Hofman.
He happens to be possibly the best coroner in the state, and a Democrat. I voted for him.
http://www.montco2011.com (He's the third person down the page.)
He renegotiated all existing contracts and even in these difficult economic times, he has managed his department under budget and has saved the county well over $250,000.00.
He is the only board-certified forensic pathologist/coroner in all 64 Pennsylvania coroner counties, and his office is the only one in all 67 Pennsylvania counties where all examinations are performed by board-certified forensic pathologists.

He was full clinical professor of pathology at Temple University Medical School and associate clinical professor of pathology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
As a member of the Departments of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Washington, DC. for almost 25 years, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the US Air Force Reserve (USAFR).
He has been a member of the Montgomery County Medical Legal Committee for over 25 years and a past chairperson for almost 10 years.
He has personally performed over 10,000 (ten thousand) autopsies, examined over 16000 (sixteen thousand) bodies and issued more than 17,000 (seventeen thousand) death certificates.
It's likely that Bevilcqua's death was by natural causes, he was elderly and ill, but it's nice to know that Dr. Hofman is investigating. They're currently waiting on the results of toxicology tests.

(16,230 posts)Maybe it's part of normal procedure not to announce an investigation until after the fact.
The whole thing smells bad to me. Hopefully the truth will come out, whatever it is.
