Wooing Saadi Gaddafi

While some within Lavalin found the dealings with Mr. Gaddafi distasteful, companies from around the world were similarly courting the regime in the years before the 2011 revolution, and a University of Toronto international business expert said they did no wrong.

“It’s unfortunate but in the world we live in, if a Canadian company were not to do it then an American or a European one would,” said Walid Hejazi, an associate professor at the Rotman School of Management.

“I don’t think you can criticize companies because at the end of the day you have to deal with the government in power in order to get the contract. If Canadian companies were to try to play high and mighty and say we’re not going to do this, then we’d be shut out of a lot of markets, China included,” he said.
