Does anybody have good scientific references as to what we should expect when the poles shift at the end of the year?

(20,805 posts)They're supposed to shift at the end of the year? Mid-week or on the weekend so we can all get our bearings before going back to work..???

(146,351 posts)of this year? Ask whoever it is your question. You can also Google polar shift and find out there. The reality is that it's not all that likely to happen in any given individual's lifetime. At the same time, it could happen anytime. Why at the end of this year?

(12,037 posts)there's something here. Yes, it will be 2012. That's why we're going to have some pretty nice auroras.
"The Sun's magnetic poles will remain as they are now, with the north magnetic pole pointing through the Sun's southern hemisphere, until the year 2012 when they will reverse again. This transition happens, as far as we know, at the peak of every 11-year sunspot cycle -- like clockwork.
EarthÂs magnetic field also flips, but with less regularity. Consecutive reversals are spaced 5 thousand years to 50 million years apart. The last reversal happened 740,000 years ago. Some researchers think our planet is overdue for another one, but nobody knows exactly when the next reversal might occur."

(14,400 posts)crate full of compasses. I didn't realize the pole shift was coming and got scammed at Battery Park...I guess I can just use wite-out to change the N and S.

(18,421 posts)It does NOT happen overnight and will not just happen in 2012. Sorry Mayan fans.

(111,456 posts)However, there have been signs that we can expect it to occur sometime during the next 400 years. Polar drift is happening and it has been accelerating, along with magnetic anomalies over large areas of the planet.
As the drift has been happening, changes in navigation, especially airline navigation have had to be made. Florida was in the news recently for having to change the orientation of two of its runways.
Since the "flip," if it occurs, has happened only rarely in the past, we don't really have any information on whether or not increased exposure to things like solar radiation occur during the process or what effect that might have on plant and animal life, if any.
However, the alarmism that tries to tie it in with the Mayan calendar would seem to be misplaced.

(25,592 posts)They did not realign them. That would be a major undertaking, as runways are 3 feet+ thick.

(13,081 posts)Like dogs who supposedly can tell when there's an imminent earthquake? Perhaps professors J and 2-Dope could tell us, but according to the scientific literature I've been reading, they've been too busy researching magnetism to focus on avian predation of consumer electronics. Maybe the next time the National Academy of Science meets I'll get the chance to ask them.

(22,308 posts)There is no brown dwarf star that is going to get here this year to screw with the Earths magnetic field. It does not exist.
I see no reason to worry about something like this. It is extremely unlikely that it will happen within my lifetime and even if it does there is a good chance it will kill me no matter what I do.
Why worry?
