well, for one thing, more professionalism throughout the military, including policies and education aimed at stopping the abuse of women.

When blacks were abused in WWI and WWII, what was the answer, keeping them out of the military? Or education and changing how the military behaved, you little insignificant WashingtonTimes washout?

4. Trotta refers to changes in military because women are now "raped too much"". Does this mean

that before there were women in combat that the number of rapes was about right?

12. The fact that this is epidemic in the military comes as no surprise to me

I was around and conscious of politics when the question of women in the military (that is to say, women being more than WACs) came up early in the Ronnie Raygun administration. The Pentagon dug in its heels and went into full-on resistance mode against the suggestion that women be allowed in combat units. With the level of hostility the military showed to the idea (the compromise that was reached at the time was women allowed in front-line units, but only in non-combat roles) it's no surprise to me that we have this 'rape culture' today.

Although I don't think it used to be this bad. I have a female cousin who was in the army in the 80s, and although I've never asked her about this issue, I never got the impression that it was as bad as it is today, so this probably developed over time. (No- I haven't forgotten about Tailhook either)

Any women out there who served in the 80s who can enlighten me on this? Was it always this bad?
