The donation may help Newt inject himself back into what has increasingly become a two-man race between Santorum and Romney.

UPDATE: Newt Gingrich's current cash crunch may soon be a thing of the past, at least for a few weeks.
CNN and CBS News are both reporting that billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson will soon fork over an additional $10 million to the Super PAC supporting the former House speaker's presidential campaign. Adelson and his wife have already given Winning the Future roughly $11 million, a donation that closed the gapat least somewhatbetween Gingrich and Mitt Romney earlier this year.
CNN's sources say that the eight-figure donation will come before the end of the month, while CBS's suggest that it could happen within days. Adelson had previously suggested that his further financial support of Gingrich was in doubt, and signaled that he'd be ready and willing to back Romney if the time came.
The Wall Street Journal, which reported earlier this week that Adelson was considering cutting another check, suggests that the billionaire's goal is to derail Rick Santorum's campaign as much as it is to help Gingrich's. Adelson is reportedly concerned about some of Santorum's deeply conservative social views, such as his strong anti-abortion stance, and is worried that he wouldn't be able to compete with President Obama in a general election showdown.

Talk about more money than sense. This is only going to help Romney. The longer the radical-idiot-conservative vote is split the better Romney's chances.

(45,274 posts)These Republicans deserve each other, and the longer they snipe at each other with truth, the more people will come to be disgusted by the whole party, what they stand for, and what they do. Right now, the R's are eating themselves alive over contraception, but soon it will be time for Newt to continue his exposure of Willard's vulture capitalism, for Willard to boil Newt in the cannibal pot with Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae, and for Santorum to continue exposing himself as a pious high-roller with a taste for corrupt liaisons with lobbyists.

(16,113 posts)They're not buying a nominee, Gingrich has no chance. I suspect this guy wants someone other than Romney and Gingrich to win, and is using one to try to get the other out of the way.

(51,800 posts)Adelson has publicly stated he is thinking of switching his support to Romney. But first Santorum needs to be knocked down so Romney can coast to the nomination. Unfortunately for Romney, he has already gotten a lot of blowback for his negative ads. So, Adelson will use Newt to run the negative ads against Santorum, all without getting the teahadists pissed off (at least not more than they already are) at Romney for bashing their favorite candidate.

(16,113 posts)if he's changed his mind, but my point was that his donation to Newt wasn't because he supported Newt.

(398 posts)Burn through all those GOP donations to the super PACs. I want to see these 1%ers burn through all their financial war chests during the Republican primary, only to end up with, well, any of the current candidates. Then, Obama calmly comes in, antes his unused super PAC cash and blows them out of the water.
Hopefully after that, they would have enough sense to see that a publicly funded campaign is cheaper and produces better results.
I can't imagine any 1%er really thinking that any of the GOP slate is anywhere close to being qualified for the office of the president. They may be greedy or egotistical, but they can't be that stupid.

(8,755 posts)First, the 10 million means nothing to him. I read a comparsion that stated that 10 million for him is the same as someone who earned $50,000 a year giving aways $45. So, big picture, he gave Newty 20-25 million dollars but to him it was no more out-of-pocket than a average night on the town for a normal person (80-90 dollars-family of 3 or 4). Its hard to grasp that perspective when the income gap is that large but it doesn't change the fact that his gift was rather insignificant to him.
My second point is this: with all this holier-than-thou attitude and high moral ground they like to take, how is it they give a pass to taking money from a guy that made his billions through gambiling and alcohol sales? He makes his wealth on some of the very things that contribute to the moral and ethical collapse of our society. I guess its ok if you a rethug.

(1,412 posts)I"m sending this to the Newt! Maybe this will stop him dumping his wives whenever they get sick. He doesn't have a Monogamy Gene!
snip:
Behavioral Neuroscience found that there is a "monogamy gene" in vole rodents that is less prevalent in its close cousin, the prairie vole. When prairie voles were injected with the gene, called the "vasopressin receptor," the usually promiscuous animals exhibited a greater attachment to their mates.

(50,594 posts)Hate him or despise him, one must admit that the presence of Newt in the race makes this shit far more entertaining than it otherwise would be...two corrupt religious zealots who got their asses thrown out of Congress are better than one.
Besides, seeing as how we haven't economically recovered from the last Republican president yet, there are a lot of really nice people in the advertising business who are eating ramen every night and would REALLY love to have some real food. Newt can help with that.

(51,800 posts)That way, when the inevitable happens and Sheldon finally abandons him for Romney, Newt will have served his purpose in knocking down Santorum with negative ads while Romney keeps his mittens clean.
