There once was a cousin. Non-political. In Florida.

I'm going to cut through the family saga/emotion, am talking in shorthand here.

Large extended family, multi-generations of Democratic votes, weeping for Al SMITH, Adlai, and you know the more recent ones. The numbers of direct relations have shrunk.

This cousin's and my nuclear branches are almost all that's left of the childhood connections. Her small branch was not only non-political but even non-voting and non-discussing about politics. Over the past decade of our older years she has made some wingnut references but just in passing and not going actually so far as to vote. She would always just say, "I don't care about politics."

In tonight's phone contact, she surprised me with a rant against "OBAMAcare" with the tritest Wingnut talking points ever. I usually don't take the bait of hurling the "talking point" attack, but her comments were SO canned that I wasn't going to waste time trying to use, oh-I-don't-know reason or facts. Her mind was totally set in cement. She was so uninformed that she said that "OBAMAcare can not PASS." I told her that, actually, it *has* already passed but isn't implemented and what she's talking about is repeal or a SCotUS strikedown. She then changed into even more DRIPPING HATRED and said that the bottom line is that OBAMA himself needs to be kicked out.

I shut down the "discussion" by saying we had been so close all these years without politics intruding and that I have just discovered that I liked it better when she always just said she doesn't care about politics. She saw where this was going and wrapped it up by saying that she and I are going to maintain our personal relationship "by going back to how it was without the politics." Well, O.K.

This would be in the Jacksonville area. (I'm many states away.)

This was reminiscent of '04 when I had linked up for a couple of years with my Vietnam shipmates in a web-ring that turned out to be a nest of wingnut chain letter vipers, and I severed whatever nostalgia I had with them.

Is it Jacksonville or something deeper solidifying? I know about Wingnuts everywhere, but if their message has penetrated even to this non-political person, something is happening.

3. The Heritage Foundation has been sponsoring an ugly ad on the Hallmark Channel.

That channel runs a lot of made for tv Christian love stories that seem to target older women. The ad is vicious. There are actually two of them and they are both horrible. That channel runs ads for all kinds of scams aimed at older people, this one being one of them.

4. Jacksonville is very conservative

Probably all the news and radio there are heavily slanted towards the right.

I only know about it from afar, but from what I read about Jacksonville politics it's very right wing from local races on up.

I'm sorry your cousin has been affected by the climate in which she lives.

5. These are the people who are so easily manipulated

because they have no real desire to examine, analyze, or seek out the other side of the story. That's precisely why the repubs discovered the effectiveness of sound bites, misinformation, and creating divisions over their misplaced fears works so well to encapsulate them. We don't do enough to call them out on their deceptions. It's most difficult when a national cable news show that serves as the rightwing vanguard headquarters and an array of national syndicated rightwing radio shows is their primary source of new. I try to reason with them one on one, but outside of putting a shock collar around their necks I don't know the answer. I will state unequivocally that I believe the dismissal of the Fairness doctrine in political media has had a devastating effect on our ability to allow these people to see another side and recognize that there is another side of each issue that they never are allowed to hear.

lots of things go into effect this year

http://www.healthcare.gov/law/timeline/

^snip^

Encouraging Integrated Health Systems
Effective January 1, 2012

The new law provides incentives for physicians to join together to form “Accountable Care Organizations.” In these groups, doctors can better coordinate patient care and improve the quality, help prevent disease and illness, and reduce unnecessary hospital admissions. If Accountable Care Organizations provide high quality care and reduce costs to the health care system, they can keep some of the money that they have helped save.

Understanding and Fighting Health Disparities
Effective March, 2012

To help understand and reduce persistent health disparities, the law requires any ongoing or new federal health program to collect and report racial, ethnic, and language data. The Secretary of Health and Human Services will use this data to help identify and reduce disparities.

Reducing Paperwork and Administrative Costs
First regulation effective October 1, 2012

Health care remains one of the few industries that relies on paper records. The new law institutes a series of changes to standardize billing and requires health plans to begin adopting and implementing rules for the secure, confidential, electronic exchange of health information. Using electronic health records will reduce paperwork and administrative burdens, cut costs, reduce medical errors and, most importantly, improve the quality of care.

9. I have cousins Jacksonville and other parts of Florida.

Jacksonville is a nest of right wing nut religious bigots. She is probably just getting bored and started watching the propaganda that has been so prevalent since President Obama won office and is running again. Then she probably had her fears re-enforced by people she has met or knows. When you live so far away from you family, as I do, it's difficult to know what others are thinking. I moved away from my home state long ago because of the bigotry and negativity.
