It makes me sick.
Chris Christie is a bigoted ignorant man who would be bigoted and ignorant fat or thin. THAT is what makes him unfit for office - not his weight. Remember Mike Huckabee - he used to be fat and he lost a lot of weight - and guess what, he is still a bigot.
I am morbidly obese. So please - feel free to pile on about how I am unfit to exist, much less be in politics where the public would ... gasp... see me.
I am not going to make excuses for my weight - I am heavy because I eat too much and exercise too little. My blood pressure is normal, I do not have diabetes, and my cholesterol is normal - my only health problem is my weight. I have been going to the Y and I have lost 30 pounds and my goal is to keep going. You know what helps me stay motivated? Positive energy. You know what doesn't? Asshats who equate being overweight as a moral failing.
I have lived in the South - Louisiana to be exact and whoooo-boy, there are some racists and homophobic jackasses down there. I live in Minnesota (where I have spent the majority of my life) and surprise, surprise - there are some of the same jackasses here.
The best we can do is focus on changing policy and attitudes through positive change and energy. That means voting for progressive candidates, supporting progressive causes and challenging right-wing lies and exposing the truth.
Making fun of someone's weight or where they live does nothing to improve education, unemployment, equal rights or the environment.
I wish I could state this better, usually I am a bit more eloquent, but I am just sickened by the type of bashing and namecalling that I am seeing here.

(3,290 posts)you are, indeed, bashing fat people.
It's a sad reality that sneering at people based on their appearance is acceptable at DU.

(3,702 posts)that means he can't manage being in office - that is bashing his weight.
His ideals and beliefs are why is unfit - not his weight.
It's one thing to want people to be healthy - for alcoholics to sober up, for smokers to quit, for fat people to lose weight but bashing them on their bad habits instead of their bad policy is not the same.

(37,748 posts)And the insults are, and will be undoubtedly rationalized through the lenses of prejudiced, provincialism, and a very deep dogma.
At the end of the day, the best policy (I've found, anyway) is simply to pat them on the head, say "bless your little heart...", and hope they eventually read literature of substantive matter to assist them in opening their eyes to the blindness of ingrained social dogmas.

(3,702 posts)but before I can hide them I have to see them first. And honestly it makes me sad and angry to read them - and maybe that is a good thing.
Thank you again for the congrats - a little positivity goes a long way with me!

Thanks for the thread, nadine_mn.

(20,783 posts)In the midst of the often extreme concern about racism, stereotypes, and giving offense, it is open season on white Southern males. Any type of bigoted joke seems to be acceptable. The double standard is absolutely appalling.

(14,128 posts)As a southerner, been critical of the South as far as politics goes, never to make fun of obesity, but do agree that the bashing and namecalling is way over the top.
The silly season me guesses. Hang in there.
