Shutting down companies and sending thousands of jobs overseas isn't what most people would consider "compassionate".

They only want as close to a "real" conservative as they can get. Whatever that is.

Certainly, he'd be further down in the polls, but I still think his fundraising/organization could have kept him competitive. And he would have positioned himself a lot better for the GE. He could have helped the Republican Party by sticking up for his signature legislation and explain the political/economic facts of life to a base that is lost in a fantasy of denial. He would have looked like a real leader. Instead, he tried to appease the worst instincts in the Party by claiming to be a 'severe conservative' - so he's labeled as a lying flip-flopper and his tack back to the middle for the GE will be undercut with multiple video/soundbites that will beg the question - were you lying then or are you lying now?

I'm really glad he chose the path of least resistance - he gained him nothing in his Party and will ultimately hurt him in the GE.

The bartender says, "Hi, Mitt."

Seriously, if Romney had thought running as a centrist would have worked, that's what he'd have done. If he thought running as a hardcore Santorum-esque far right conservative would have been better, that's what he would have done. And so forth...

The guy's a human weathervane.

He's the guy who explains to employees how losing their jobs will be "an exciting opportunity". Then shit cans the remaining company and its loyal employees.

Just like Meg Whitman here in CA most people seem to have no problem recognizing a cookie cutter soulless MBA toting execu-drone.
They both got MBA's at Harvard. That may have helped to develop their "personalities".

Center would mean he was running as far left as about any "viable" candidate in either party in about a generation and "compassionate conservative" would put him at shrub.

the other candidates the past two election cycles have driven him from the center. The talking heads don't want someone from the center. That's Romney's whole problem. He could easily run as a moderate north eastern fiscal Republicans, but the party doesn't want one. So he's run against his record trying to appeal to people he clearly does not like.
