By Rich Abdill Thu., Feb. 23 2012 at 11:53 AM
Allen West is outraged that it's so expensive to keep gasoline in his car. It cost him $70 last night, he posted on Facebook today.
Seventy bucks! An outrage! An aberration! Sarcasm aside, that's a TON of money to be paying for gas. Especially since West drives such a compact, fuel-efficient... Hummer.
Yes, the congressman is upset that it's expensive to fill up his 2008 Hummer H3, which has a 23-gallon gas tank and gets 15 miles per gallon on a good day.
It's all part of the GOP's national message, though -- Speaker of the House John Boehner told Republicans to make gas prices an issue over the Presidents' Day recess, and West is doing his best. He also bemoaned President Obama's oil policies at yesterday's town hall, pointing to gas prices that have shot up drastically since Obama took office.

best line is last:
The bottom line is that while Republicans are ganging up on Obama for rising prices, it's not all about the Keystone XL pipeline -- there's no one way to reduce prices on a commodity traded on a global scale. Well, except driving something other than a Hummer.

Allen West sounds like an Idiocrat.

(2,284 posts)We have several hummers in our city. One has a license plate that states "8 MPG". It gets a lot of thumbs down.
I can't believe West ever gets 15 mpg with that hummer with cartoon tires.

(30,058 posts)With the Democratic control Congress investigating gas prices and large profits of oil companies, gas prices came down. Maybe the election of Obama brought the gas prices down, who knows. Am I happy of high gas prices, no, but I see where having sanctions on Iran is a good thing. Do I think electing any of the Republicans currently running is going to bring down gas prices, no, but I also do not hold Obama responsible for the rise in gas prices.

(47,953 posts)Economists were projecting a possible depression. People were losing their jobs left and right. Even China was being affected. It was a pretty scary time, and all sorts of commodity prices fell around that time. They rapidly bounced back when Obama restored confidence that we weren't going to all be unemployed.
I swear the oil co's might just adopt this as a technique, though, have a 1 day 1/2 off sale every time a new Democrat is inaugurated President.

(54,506 posts)My car holds a little over 60 liters and gas costs about 1.56 a liter.
In US terms, it gets about 24 miles to the gallon, and is almost ten years old.
If West wants to drive around in the civilian version of a Sherman Tank, I guess
it's his right, but he shouldn't be whining about the cost--he knew that when he
bought his abomination to begin with.
