On TCM now - "East of Eden", "Grapes of Wrath", followed by the Carradine movie about Woody Guthrie! Step back into the right now with Steinbeck! Who would have thought the good old days would return again! Perhaps these times of ours will produce more great novels, provided the computers haven't shrunk everyones attention spans to zero!

(16,064 posts)as a gift for his college graduation we went out to the Salinas Valley, Monterrey (Cannery Row) etc. We did a Steinbeck self guided tour.
I've always loved Steinbeck, I am quite sure that he (along with Upton Sinclair) is responsible for my socialistic tendencies and my sons great passion when it comes to social justice and human rights.

However, I'll be watching the other two.

"We are lonesome animals. We spend all our life trying to be less lonesome. One of our ancient methods is to tell a story begging the listener to say and to feel Yes, thats the way it is, or at least thats the way I feel it. Youre not as alone as you thought.

After watching last night, I am convinced, now having finally seen the whole thing at my current age, that this is one of the most depressing movies I have seen to date (not counting "Rosewood" . And it's remarkable that the film treatment was altered to soften the impact somewhat because the book was so heartbreaking.
