Steinbeck Fans Unite!

On TCM now - "East of Eden", "Grapes of Wrath", followed by the Carradine movie about Woody Guthrie! Step back into the right now with Steinbeck! Who would have thought the good old days would return again! Perhaps these times of ours will produce more great novels, provided the computers haven't shrunk everyones attention spans to zero!

as a gift for his college graduation we went out to the Salinas Valley, Monterrey (Cannery Row) etc. We did a Steinbeck self guided tour.

I've always loved Steinbeck, I am quite sure that he (along with Upton Sinclair) is responsible for my socialistic tendencies and my sons great passion when it comes to social justice and human rights.

and the film was even more pretentious while downplaying the only interesting character, Mama turned Madam.

However, I'll be watching the other two.

one of my favorite quotes of his:

"We are lonesome animals. We spend all our life trying to be less lonesome. One of our ancient methods is to tell a story begging the listener to say — and to feel — ”Yes, that’s the way it is, or at least that’s the way I feel it. You’re not as alone as you thought.”

i have a niece who is a little newlywed smartypants and she came by to get a book
i read at least 2 a week and i keep them in case i want to read them again so i have hundreds if not thousands
all kinds too from dry technical medical textbooks to wild science fiction
i think i have a good collection and i dont mind lending
so i gave her cannery row and in dubious battle
she was back in a week and took every page of my steinbeck
like 20 or so books
i have known this girl since infancy and we have never connected like we have over steinbeck

and it had been a long time since I'd seen it. What struck me was the echoes of the same dynamics in today's society.

in its entirety. Over the years, had only seen parts and pieces and read the book in parts and pieces...

After watching last night, I am convinced, now having finally seen the whole thing at my current age, that this is one of the most depressing movies I have seen to date (not counting "Rosewood&quot . And it's remarkable that the film treatment was altered to soften the impact somewhat because the book was so heartbreaking.
