Do we have the skinny yet on the Ohio school murderer? (Original Post) bluestateguy Feb 2012 OP
Appears at this point to be an angry, unhappy, isolated teen. nt TheWraith Feb 2012 #1
All that and access to a gun. Hoyt Feb 2012 #2
Your exploitation of a murder to push an agenda never fails to disturb. nt TheWraith Feb 2012 #6
Your intentional ignoring of a key fact in this murder is obvious. Guns contributed to this. Hoyt Feb 2012 #8

but at least imho the gun play in this case is a symptom of a more deeper problem... just as it was at Columbine and most of these tragedies.

It is time we face it... depression. mental health and yes, bullying.

And yes, while I understand we need to close a few loopholes (when it happens it will seem sudden)... kids access to guns from the market is a minuscule part of the equation.

He lived part time with one of his parents and grandparents and the family had many guns and did a lot of target practice.

It is a sad situation and the community needs everyone's prayers.

Local news from Cleveland has contradictory reports. One classmate said the boy was a loner; another said he had friends. Another indicated he had "gotten kind of goth." Still another reporter learned that he recently participated in activities with a local Christian youth group. Neighbors to the boy's grandparents said he was a nice kid.

It doesn't appear that easy generalizations will be possible.

CHARDON, Ohio - A 5 On Your Side investigation into the family life of the alleged teen gunman at Chardon High School reveals a family life disrupted by divorce and violence.

Geauga County Common Pleas Court records show the parents of Thomas "TJ" Lane III divorced in March 2002.

One month later, in April 2002, Lane's father, Thomas M. Lane Jr. was issued an indictment charging him with felonious assault, kidnapping and disrupting public service.

Snip~ "Finally, in October of 2002, Lane struck a plea deal and was sentenced on the assault and disruption charges, but the kidnapping charge was reduced to unlawful restraint and the attempted murder charge was eventually dropped."

The only question is.... where did this kid get the gun? Probably from his father....

I believe all crime is economic. The kids father lost his job... the family goes downhill... Republicans fail to support any family services.. gut the social safety net.. and Viola.. school shooter.

The kid lived with his grandparents.

This article states that he was bullied and attended a school for "at risk" kids:

The victims were in the school's cafeteria waiting for a bus for the Auburn Career Center when the shots were fired. According to a survivor, Lane attended Lake Academy for at-risk students.

As for the "at risk" school, I believe this is where he attended:

The Lake Academy is an alternative education program offering a unique approach to formal education for students who are experiencing serious challenges in meeting expectations within traditional school settings. Many of the students attending The Lake Academy are considered “reluctant learners” and may be struggling with a variety of individual problems, such as: substance abuse /chemical dependency, anger issues, mental health issues, truancy, delinquency, difficulties with attention/organization, and academic deficiencies.

I'm sure that more will unfold in the days to come.

The M$M may, but not here.

Something needs to be done about all this constant bullying, however I have no idea what.

after that... we can start by taking it seriously.

The problem is that we mostly do not, and boys will be boys is still pretty much it.
