but are more than willing to spend time lecturing us regarding our shallowness and sharing with us ad nauseum all the whys and wherefores of their own disinterest.

I was a bit slow to get to like it, but wow I sure changed my mind, what a great series.

(37,364 posts)I can't tell you how much I loathe watching professional sporting events. I loathe American football in particular and never watch it. I don't mind college basketball sometimes but have to be in the mood to follow a team. The Superbowl is a glutton's orgy though at all levels.

Don't worry about liking football at OUR party - I am the only one who will be actually watching the game!
But there will definitely be some gluttony, and I am feeling zero guilt personally.

(24,324 posts)BTW, why spend so much energy loathing something?
If you don't like it, don't watch.
Actually I think it's a pretty stupid game as well. Minor league baseball is more my speed.

(18,402 posts)Who says people think they're too cool to watch? Maybe they just don't care for it.
Not everyone likes to watch football. I grew up in a football watching family, and I never could get into the game. I remember asking my dad to explain it to me several times, because I really WANTED to be able to share in the activity. I still don't understand it, and I still don't like it. I've always enjoyed a little baseball and basketball, but football just leaves me cold.
People don't all have to be the same: you don't need to insult them just because they don't want to watch a game. That's pretty harsh.

(15,393 posts)Never seen a Superbowl... or World Series... I think I caught one game of the NBA playoffs in college (Jordan led the Bulls to victory), but that's because there was a pizza party in the dorm lounge.
I just can't get excited over spoiled millionaires playing games.

Knowing most of them--90%+, will never make the big leagues.

(40,416 posts)Some people just don't like football. It has nothing to do with "über-hip" or "too cool".
It's a personal choice, kind of like one would make if one chooses to go to a big party to watch the game.
Lighten up a little. Let's all get along here.

(2,116 posts)high salaries some of these people receive, which are totally out of proportion with any value they provide to society. the whole event (the super bowl) is indicative of a lot of things that are wrong with the world, and therefore make it hard to enjoy any sporting interest in it that i might have. does that explain it?

(21,020 posts)Not just football...and not just the Superbowl.
Quite a few other things people have been shamed for...
Like what a waste of time "American Idol" was.
Or how utterly shallow some of us were for (gasp!!!) caring about the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton and for (double gasp!!!) watching it on TV.
Hey, if someone doesn't watch something, I guess it's OK to say "I don't watch that", but geez, leave it at that. Why do people have to stick their noses up in the air and act like they're way too cool to pay attention to something so....
common?

His comment to NPR this morning matches my feelings about Professional Sports, "we sped way too much time on them."
There, I said it.

Super Bowl? What's that? Isn't it some kind of bowl to eat my environmentally friendly cereal out of? Personally, I prefer Early Bird Granola: Aloha Recipe. It's yummy!
Why in the world would anyone watch a cereal bowl?
