A South Florida eighth grade English teacher of The Charter Schools of Boynton Beach has been suspended after assigning Lil Wayne lyrics as part of a homework assignment to her students.
One parent, Vanessa Guzman, spoke with WPTV in Florida, regarding her disapproval of the teacher's assignment, which included directions to underline examples of figurative language in Lil Wayne's Cory Gunz-assisted "6 Foot 7 Foot" lyrics.

An excerpt from "6 Foot 7 Foot's" follows:
Two bitches at the same time, synchronized swimmers
Got the girl twisted cause she open when you twist her
Never met the bitch, but I fuck her like I missed her
Life is the bitch, and death is her sister

If that teacher really wanted to enlighten those children she should have chosen a song like "If I Ruled the World" by Nas or "Changes" by Tupac or for a more recent example "Same Love-" by Macklemore. But sheesh...when attempts to open kids' minds go wrong, this is why people turn to Glenn Beck style radical authoritarian conservatism and send their kids to fundamentalist Christian schools or homeschool because ANYTHING that contradicts their pure Family Values(TM) will turn their kids into pot-smoking, parent-disobeying REBELS!
On the other hand this is a charter school we're discussing here, so I guess that must be real telling.

(8,830 posts)I did not feel the need to stand shrieking on the sidelines, expressing my outrage. The school took action; I doubt the teacher will make the same error again.
This has little to do with the charter school system, really. Public school teachers also make poor choices - and are duly castigated for them. I don't like the charter system; it is doing little to nothing to improve the quality of education in this nation - but I don't see this as a symptom. This was a singular poor choice made by one teacher. There is no evidence that the school embraced this as part of the standard curriculum.
Don't let my lack of hysteria stand in the way of your reaction, however.

(26,582 posts)How would any adult think that's appropriate song lyrics for children? RIghtfully suspended, unless there's more to this story that's not being reported.
