(16,392 posts)What kind of country have we become when Girl Scouts can't even walk door to door? They are going to have to do most all of their selling in front of grocery stores now. Think about it: a community where Girl Scouts can't sell cookies to their neighbors. Sorry for the rant.
Edit to add: Since GS have become such a target of the Right, I think I shall have to buy twice as many boxes this year.

The political team sport mentality that grips our country is to blame as well. It's all supposed to be black and white, my way or the highway, anyone who doesn't agree with you is the enemy. No subtlety, no nuance.
What a sad state our society is in.

hahahahahah.... oh, guys.... seriously... You are JUST NOTICING that Girl Scouts are all about empowering girls? That they affirm diversity and regard women in the public eye who demonstrate courage and integrity as role models?
Really?
You're just noticing?

(16,916 posts)A "samosa" is a delicious, savory, triangular, hot-pocket sort of thing from India. The GS cookie is called a "Samoa" and while also delicious, is not hot, savory, or from India (though you can put one in your pocket).

(6,402 posts)Both them and the BSA have recommended against door to door sales of anything and everything for the last several years.
Which is made worse by the fact that most parents can no longer bring such things to work because of issues there as well.
So the kids are relegated to trying to sell at Walmart entrances or other locations.
A sad turn of events in the past decade.

(12,513 posts)a little 4 year old dressed in a Halloween GI Joe costume rang the doorbell of a neighbor for Trick or Treat, and a guy opened the door and shot the kid dead with a 44 magnum pistol.
Why? the guy said the kid's costume gave him a flashback of losing his son a decade earlier in Vietnam.
We live in a sick society.

(1,451 posts)She was probably terrified out her little mind. This is so cold. When I was coming up the Brownies were the in thing. Selling cookies by the Girl Scouts is as Traditional as Apple Pie. We should be supporting the Girl scouts instead of pulling Guns on them. This ability for any old fuckface to get a weapon has to stop. One day it may be one of theirs. Funny how ending up in the same boat teaches you how to row. Maybe Girl Scouts should work in teams and send out flyers to show the day and date when they are going to be in neighborhoods, and have Adult Chaperones. Maybe the flyer can have short order form. That way they only go to homes that want cookies. just a suggestion. I just wouldn't want another parent to go through what this parent went through or what this parent is going through http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/15/justice/michigan-woman-shot-charges/

A few weeks ago Idaho's head teabagger told his minions people in other countries think we're crazy when you tell them we have such freedom to keep and bear arms. In case you want to know WHY they think that, well...most countries don't have people pulling guns on members of youth groups.

(1,077 posts)First, is the Girl Scout all right? How are the parents? The Scout leaders, ok?
Now, is it possible to revoke this guys right to RKBA? I'm of the opinion for transgressions like this DO NOT deserve a second chance. It seem the NRA's narrative is encouraging more innocent neighborhood actions to potential capital offense. This is not a "I was just kidding" situation.

(3,220 posts)Tons of gun owners in this culture are like that cartoon on Bowling for Columbine. They're trembling with fear, and whip their guns out at everything that gets near them: little girls, puppies, rainbows, etc.
I'm sure the gun owner "feared for his life." If you're afraid of everything, everything is a threat to you.

(4,788 posts)this is one reason I am not letting my daughter go door to door asking for money for a school in Nepal that her school has decided is the kids' community service project this year. We don't live in a bad neighborhood, but it's not the greatest either and I see far too many "Nobama" or "You can keep the hope and change and I'll keep my guns." stickers around. And my daughter is adopted from China, so she doesn't look like the people around us, which would make things possibly worse.
