Justifying Keystone XL in terms of "we" and "our" like it's our oil. He's talking about energy independence as if we've nationalized energy in this country.
He's also talking about how the railroad system is unsafe to transport oil so therefore we need a pipeline. And since our environmental regs are so much better we need to refine it here.
Why is he doing this? He knows better.

(32,617 posts)I watched him do the same bit on tv last week. He is under-informed.

(4,458 posts)He fails to mention that All oil is sold from the International Market...as I understand it-How has the prior years of Oil Extraction in the US Lowered Our Costs? Increased Our Safety and Protected the Environment?
He's telling us to just "sit down-shut up-there's No hope in fighting this-to make the best of it?" Is that his message?

(28,136 posts)He is cheerleading for Keystone and is talking in condescending terms and tones about people he calls "the greens" and "enviros".

A "can't refuse it" program to help fund the installation of Solar Panels on Every Roof-Top-everywhere? etc's
No-this is being sold as a singular energy source. I am going out on a limb here-but at Any time in the past did Any of the Corporation NOT make Incredible Environmental Protection/Clean-Up declarations--now-look at WV, TX MN, PA again--etc's.
My answer is No.

(39,215 posts)Speaking of pipelines. I have posted a few times about the pipeline going through NE MN around the Cloquet/Duluth area. I think they have a problem. There is heavy equipment and workers at the site and they have the wood they used in the original project piled by the road. Now it is way below 0 degrees around here and no one does that kind of work unless there is a leak or something like that going on. I also heard by the grapevine that there is a leak.
More than likely they did not bury the pipes deep enough for this cold and they broke. Wish I knew just what is going on.

I don't think he's selling out so much as convincing himself that this is the lesser of two evils for something that he believes is inevitable. And, from that perspective, I agree with him. The pipeline is the lesser of two evils. What I really wish he and everyone else would do, instead of trying to justify the pipeline, is ask why the hell we are the ones risking our environment for Canadian oil that will be sold on the international market. Why isn't this pipleline built strictly in Canada. They have refineries. They have ports. Oh yeah. They also have stricter environmental regulations, unlike this country. It's looking more and more like a fucking Third World country...

(39,343 posts)I remember hearing something about him being a republican a few years ago.
Maybe he's just got some parts of the Old Eddie stuck in his new Converted Eddie body. I heard the first 5 minutes of his show and he was being brash about supporting KXL and hating on those who oppose it. Maybe he'll let them lay the pipe through his property in Fargo or close to where his drinking water comes from.

He is either wilfully ignorant or a purposeful liar.

(40,372 posts)we are being held hostage between the choice of a pipeline and unsafe rail transport.
An horrendous devil's bargain. He can't step out of the box and acknowledge that the oil companies are intent on screwing us one way or the other. Tar-sands are far too toxic to mine in the first place. He doesn't get it.
okaawhatever
(9,478 posts)feeling like two issues are being conflated. Yes the tar-sands oil is evil, but will it continue to be mined if Keystone isn't approved? If you know please fill me in.
it certainly will. That is why we are being held hostage, so to speak.

Solar power in Germany http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_power_in_Germany
Germany is the world's top photovoltaics (PV) installer, with a solar PV capacity of 35.082 gigawatts (GW) at the end of September 2013.[2] The German new solar PV installations increased by about 7.6 GW in 2012, and solar PV provided 18 TWh (billion kilowatt-hours) of electricity in 2011, about 3% of total electricity.[3] Some market analysts expect this could reach 25 percent by 2050.[4] Germany has a goal of producing 35% of electricity from renewable sources by 2020 and 100% by 2050.[5
Germany set a world record for solar power production with 24.0 GW produced at midday on July 21, 2013.[14][15] Approximately 1.31.4 million solar power systems helped to set this record

(15,805 posts)Ed Schultz is a vocal champion of union causes, and he's paid a handsome sum by those groups for his efforts on their behalf. Coupled with the number of big unions that are pushing for construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, it seems plausible that he would also support that project.

can you imagine the grief Obama has been getting on this since 2009, and he still has not caved?
So much for Caver in Chief, for those of Lesser spines and minds.
Koch Grief was unleashing the teaparty in 2010. And Bill Clinton's little childish tantrums against Obama could be explained by this as well.
