I'd like to know more about his claim that he didn't have a choice.
Please share your insight.

NFL / Fox: Would you like to play the Super Bowl?
RHCP: Shit yeah!
NFL / Fox: We will pay you this much $$$.
RHCP: That's cool.
NFL / Fox: K. Sign this contract.
RHCP: Yup.
later...
NFL / Fox: We don't want anything real to happen. Wet weather messing up the instruments, cold taking you out of tune... So the band will be a recording.
RHCP: That sux. We won't do it.
NFL / Fox: You signed a contract. You see that jar on my bookshelf.
RHCP: Yeah.
NFL / Fox: Your balls are in there until you execute the contract.
RHCP: Oh... Um... K.

(2,068 posts)The NFL requires a taped track due to the complications with live music when done on a temporary stage wheeled out with minutes to spare. I believe only Prince and the Rolling Stones are the rare exceptions over the last decade or so. The vocals can be live, as well as drums sometimes, but no way for all the other backing instruments which would be on a tape, minus vocals and probably also with vocals in case mic went bad.
