I grabbed a steel rod I have near my bed. My first thought was that I had died and this was the bright light you are supposed to see. My second thought was this will not end well.
Then the light was in my eyes and I heard the word police.
I was not scared for some reason. My adrenaline had not gone up. I have no idea why.
I got up and followed them to my living room. They told me my door had been cracked open and a neighbor had reported it.
I followed them out and there were my neighbors. I think they had watched my door for a while before calling the police. They didn't want anything to hurt me. Thank Jeebus for them.
I have no idea why I didn't check it before I went to bed. That is my routine. I guess it wasn't routine enough. I now have a sign bigger than gawd to remind me.
I am still trying to find the 50 years I lost.
I never did get scared. Go figure.
I am a very lucky person with great neighbors.

(14,040 posts)and I'm glad you're safe and that you have good neighbors. Are you sure the sign is big enough? Maybe you need two?

(7,699 posts)I was stunned enough when at work many years ago, at a job 30 miles from home, I got
a call saying "This is Officer So-and-So. I'm calling from your living room", when our
house had been broken into. I about fell off my chair, literally.
I couldn't have handled what you went through. Whew. But thank goodness for neighbors
who care!

(22,271 posts)several years ago. She said she was at work and got a call from her then 12-year-old daughter asking her if she should tip the fireman.
Turns out there was a VERY small fire in the kitchen and the daughter had called the fire department. But can you imagine getting that call?

(9,275 posts)Or did it just not latch when you last closed it?
My husband did that years ago and our cat got out, in the snow. He was found 3 months later, sick and with worms. Once he got better he purred nonstop and never went to the door again. He went to the Bridge at 15 but we still tell friends about Ricky's Great Adventure.

(16,334 posts)I'm glad it all worked out. Our front door will blow open if we don't lock it with the deadbolt. But I doubt any of my neighbors would notice!

I am serious about the first 2 thoughts I had.

(28,394 posts)Do you live in a high-crime area, that they thought it necessary to call the police FIRST?
Seems like an over-reaction to me.
Glad you are OK. I would have had a heart attack and then they would be calling the paramedics.

(14,400 posts)They thought someone might be in there. Hello, any scumbags in here? They did the right thing, and the reason the cops didn't knock is that they thought there was a chance someone might be in there.

(17,111 posts)If anything were to happen, it would be my last resort to catch somebody off guard and/or smack them to hell and back.
It's not very long.
I don't have any real worries here, but just in case.
