(1,262 posts)All I see going on here is the ramp-up of two new multibillion dollar farming industries - Hemp and Cannabis. Given the entrenched proto-fascist police state we currently live under, I don't see the cops letting up on independent growers any time soon.
The only way would be to preemptively enact protective laws against the inevitable Big Agra privatizing of cannabis. Fight for the right to freely grow the plant without restriction. Won't happen though, as long as the public takes their cues from the social engineering propaganda of the media and not each other.
So, get ready for GMO cannabis heavily dosed with pesticides and the inevitable cancers that will result down the line.
A more general, but related observation: As I see it, the simultaneous mainstream rollouts normalizing Cannabis and Gay rights in the media and legislatures are no indication of social progress in any way. They merely represent the opening of new markets for the corporate owners who want to sell us more of their crap.
Am I a pessimist? Maybe I'm just a pessimist.

But I agree with your concerns about the corportization of the industry. It will happen. Anything for a buck. Anything. There are absolutely no standards when it comes to profit. I seriously believe greed is the worst of the seven deadly sins.

(27,137 posts)Although many still don't realize that with the repeal of the 18th Amendment it allowed people to legally make up to 200 gallons of beer and 200 of wine for personal consumption per year. And even distilled spirits if you're willing to pay the IRS a tax. If not, you're a Mooshiner. So for a family of five, that's 1000 gallons of beer and 1000 gallons of wine, which is a pretty good start on things.
But when they made cannabis illegal in 1937, they did so with the AMA (the ones pushing for it) fully knowing that cannabis would cure disease like it had been doing for centuries and why they included in the US Pharmacopeia. They did so primarily to help alleviate the anemia they were suffering in their bank accounts at cannabis' hands.
But one doesn't need a recipe to make cannabis. To cook it. Distill it. Bottle it. Or any of that stuff. It just grows all by itself. Dirt and water and sun. That's it. So once the flood gates of cannabis legality are opened, I'd love to see them try to stop all the buds from growing. In Europe some clever cannabis campaigners were at one point tossing cannabis seeds wherever they went.
As it stands now we're spending million$ each year eradicating skunk-weed, which is the male plant (hemp) that grows in ditches all over America. Then later they pound their chests claiming how they're doing such a great job against drug abuse by stemming the tide against this ''gateway'' drug. Bearing in-mind that this crap barely has a trace of THC in it, but we've spending billions over the years to have the DEA blow tax money on skunk-weed cleanup.
But now there are some of these new laws being proposed that would allow an individual to grow their own plants as long as it's not a commercial operation. This way a person can grow their own supply of medicinal cannabis -- like I need to be able to do.
- So no, I don't think you're pessimistic. We've all been conditioned to see the worst possible side of all things regarding cannabis, because that's pretty much all we've known. It was always bullshit. But it's a new day dawning and it's time for the shlubs to go.......

(3,447 posts)I work for a GS council--we have to deal with crap like this every day. All it takes is one photo like this for all the fundies and crazies to come out and attack GS for things that are total LIES. That means that, instead of doing our REAL jobs, we have to take time out to deal with this on an almost daily basis anymore. And once this shit gets on the internet, it never goes away.
Stupid stuff like this hurts Girl Scouts - and this is right when we're starting cookies sales.
People will believe any shit these days. I'm sure whoever photoshopped this thought it was funny.
Girls and women will continue to be targets for discimination and hate until this shit stops.
