On Thursday, his hopes for a $126-a-week lifeline were dashed when the U.S. Senate failed to reinstate a program of emergency federal unemployment benefits.
And on Friday, President Obama signed legislation that will cost Buitrago and more than 325,000 other New Yorkers an average of $1,180 a year in food stamps.
"I've had to ask for money from friends and from my children just to be able to make the rent," said Buitrago, who lost his job as a building super.

(6,994 posts)On the campaign trail President Obama promised he would never sign legislation that would hurt the poor. He promised he would not allow Social Security or Medicare to be a part of the budget negotiations. Well guess what..That was before Jan 20th 2013
I think he even used the term life line when he said there were those unemployed that needed the boost economically when he talked about our economic recovery...
I voted for the President both times and I sure as hell would never vote for a Republican especially poor little rich kid Romney..but hey the President lied to us and I believed him when he made those promises to working class Americans. We need a real progressive candidate for 2016 ..Warren or even Biden would be more of a working class friend. Hillary would just be another corporate sponsored candidate.
I just cant believe he didn't stand up for the poor and caved t the Repukes...again

(23,500 posts)If Obama had vetoed the measure, the Food Stamp program would have ended entirely,
and everyone would be screaming about how Obama vetoed food stamps.
Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

(6,994 posts)and the Repukes would have still voted for the bill. Remember many of the Congressional member will benefit from this farm bill. As far as the post about this is the best we can get as far a Democrat, well it it time for real progressive party that liberal Democrats are ready for

(6,994 posts)during his second term with no fear of being re-elected he would have more of a backbone and stand up for the poor and middle class and put the Repukes in their place...That's my problem but again it could be worse.

(23,500 posts)"Obama vetoed food stamps" would be electoral dynamite and he knows it.
We cannot afford to give our opponents that kind of ammunition or kiss the Senate good-bye, and probably the Presidency in 2016 as well.
I know it sucks for the people who qualified for food stamps by reason of getting heating assistance, but you help who you can.
