Internet pranksters get even with anti-gay, racist restaurant owner
Sunday, 09 February 2014 09:12
Internet pranksters have flooded Yelp with reviews lauding an Enid, Okla., diner as the best gay bar in town. The campaign is designed to taunt the diners right-wing owner Gary James, an anti-gay, white supremacist who refuses to serve gays and other minorities.
James, who has owned and run Garys Chicaros for 44 years, told local news channel KFOR-TV: I think I can spot a freak or a faggot.
I really dont want gays around, he added. Any man that would compromise his own body would compromise anything.
In protest, pranksters have left reviews on Yelp describing Garys Chicaros as the best gay bar in Enid. One review states that Gary plans to host a live viewing of RuPauls Drag Race Season.

This is a great place in Oklahoma for gay Mexican disabled Muslim Democrats to eat! It has a nice BDSM club in the back, but it's mostly guys in the Klan outfit.

(32 posts)I'd like to see our justice department crack down on people like James for violating the Constitution. They should send a couple gay black guys to the restaurant and when they are refused service, shut down the restaurant.

(5,756 posts)As for his discrimination based on race, religion or disability he's out of line with federal law there.

For the record, I think that what the owner is doing is deplorable.

(11,175 posts)There is no general prohibition against "discrimination" (a process that, broadly understood, is quite proper and necessary) or even against irrational or unfair discrimination. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited only certain specified forms of discrimination. The major categories are race, religion, and ethnic origin. The provision concerning sex discrimination applies only to employment, not to public accommodations like restaurants. As a result, for example, McSorley's Old Ale House in New York City famously did not admit women until 1970, when New York City law compelled it to.
Other forms of discrimination weren't addressed at all. That's why, for example, there was a later Age Discrimination in Employment Act.
Nothing in the Civil Rights Act prohibited discrimination based on sexual or affectional preference. That's why there was a push, similar to the push for the ADEA, to pass a new bill, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, that would ban such discrimination in employment. It passed the Senate late last year but is expected to go nowhere in the House. Even if it passes in its most inclusive form, it wouldn't apply to places of public accommodation. This bigot in Oklahoma would have to hire LGBT people as servers but could still refuse LGBT customers.
Note that some states and localities have protections that are broader than those of federal law. A state or locality can't authorize discrimination that's illegal under federal law, but it can go beyond federal law in ensuring equal treatment. It's safe to assume that neither Enid nor Oklahoma is in the forefront of such efforts.

(50,013 posts)The food was bland as it is focused more on Black History Month and the Special Olympics. Would come back for the gloryhole.
Owner Gary's ex boyfriend, Tyrone Blackman, has opened up his own gay bar in southern Oklahoma. Tyrone says Gary's club is by and far the best gay club in the States. Tyrone still pops in now and then and always brings with him the hottest gaggle of guys; it's totally fun to see him and Gary doing karaoke together just like the old days, and it if it's Leather Night, they'll judge the Meat Inspection contest together. They are a real Simon and Paula duo!

(4,840 posts)life isn't made so uncomfortable and suffocating here for these racist and homophobic scum that they are driven out of the country. I resent that they are allowed to share a country with the rest of us.

(7,720 posts)I was wondering how it came to be that he was interviewed by a TV reporter. Apparently, his views are widely known.
"James, whose business tagline is where the great whites gather, sells T-shirts emblazoned with racial and homophobic slurs. In addition to refusing services for gays, James also declines serving African Americans, Hispanics, Muslims, people with disabilities or people on welfare."

Ugh. What a place -- the owner, the clientele, the complainant.

(2,419 posts)is like putting out a massive forest fire. You knock down the main fire, you isolate the components, get it to where its manageable, but even when you think its going out, there will always be hot spots that flare up every once in a while.
There's still way too many hot spots but the way to get the fire out is to keep them isolated and under observation and then you stomp them out every time they flame up. The more educated people are, the less fuel there is. Once the fuel is gone, the fire goes out. There's my analogy for the day!
