Marcus Smart, the OK State player who hit a fan, has been suspended for 3 games.

The fan will not be attending any more Texas Tech basketball games this year either home or away. He did this voluntarily. His name is John Orr.

Texas Rech talked to the fans near Mr.Orr. They said he didn't use a racial slur but that he did say something nasty. Mr.Orr agreed that he did.

Lubbock and Texas Tech have a reputation among other teams. It is known to be rough place to play and the fact that vile things are said is not news.

Texas Tech and the conference should have stopped this a long time ago. Being a noisy place to play with supportive fans is a different animal than a bad place to play because of abuse. They might not be able to catch everybody but they could have put a foot down and stopped this to a large extent.

Mr.Orr has a history of being nasty to players. Personally I think he should be banned.

This is a great opportunity to address the vicious behavior that gets passed off as "home court/field advantage," but I'm not hopeful.

Here is my take on responding to fans:

Orr should be banned because he has a history of being nasty.
Players are suspended for 3 games for this.

If they aren't going to crack down hard enough on fans shouting racial slurs, then they'd better not ban the players for reacting to it. I think a suspension for 3 games is enough.

Sports crowds can get dangerously close to mob mentality. Some ugly things have happened, as a result.

Frankly, we need to stop coddling verbal abusers from those pushed to the limits by their vitriol.

It's a sad mistake to allow people to roam around thinking that they should have a right to say or scream anything at anyone or in any venue without repercussions, but then to turn around and punish those who sock them.

Don't arrest them. Just don't give them protection from their victims.

He will hear shite in the NBA that is just as nasty. Every fan can't be caught. Either be a player or quit and be a security monitor.
The teams and venues have to crack down on the fans.

If YOU want to be on a team and respond to fans, join a rec league. They are horrible. Then see how effective you are as a player or at stopping fan abuse.
