an ambassadorship under Richard Nixon and then again under Bush I she also was the chief protocol officer who was in charge of Carter's inauguration because Ford or Nixon put her in that post.

I wouldn't have voted for her, but she wasn't repulsively crazy the way the modern GOP is.
