First model in wheelchair featured at New York Fashion Week

On Feb. 6, Danielle Sheypuk made history by becoming the first-ever model in a wheelchair to be featured at New York Fashion Week, participating in the show of designer Carrie Hammer.

It’s a big first in the fashion world. The industry has been criticized for having narrow standards of beauty and for a lack of diversity among models, along with contributing to body-image issues among women.

In an emailed statement, Hammer explained that she wanted to showcase “real women” models like Sheypuk in her show. “I wanted to take the first step in shifting the trend to powerful women and away from gaunt models. This will start a conversation about the type of models that are cast in campaigns. This recognition will help pave the way to have healthy restrictions around models and over-photoshopping.”

And when you think of all the different kinds and forms of women are out there in the workplace - doesn't it stand to reason that wheelchair-bound women would also want to look good?

I'm not sure our society fully "gets" how profoundly EVERY issue affects women. EVERY issue involves women. EVERY issue has women all over it. Just consider how many flavors women come in:

Black women
White women
Latinas
Asian women
Young women
Old women
Working women
Retired women
Unemployed women
Catholic women
Jewish women
Christian women
Muslim women
Hindu women
Buddhist women
Atheist women
Agnostic women
Monastic women
Gay women
Straight women
Bisexual women
Transgendered women
Corporate women
Volunteer women
Women business owners
Mothers
Childless women
Infertile women
Women adoptees
Blue-collar women
Pink-collar women
White-collar women
Military women
Handicapped women
Divorced women
Widowed women
Married women
Religious women
Immigrant women
Property-owning women
Women renters
Rich women
Poor women
Middle-class women
You-Name-It women

There's a female of pretty much EVERYTHING. ALL these issues cut across the overriding demographic group with two X-chromosomes. All roads - and issues - lead to women. EVERY issue is a woman's issue. Because it's GOING to affect women in one way or another. We're more than half the world's population. We really can't be ignored or overlooked or short-changed or under-estimated or trifled with - even though there certainly are those who try.
