I don't even know what to say about this match. Blackburn is just so free of rational thinking. David Gregory mentioned current storms with the guest list and topics so I guess he will be holding her hand and dusting her off after Bill Nye says anything informative.

(36,224 posts)I don't think he knows how to debate or in the least deal with these whackos, and he becomes ineffective.

(24,452 posts)however, I can imagine that being a genuinely smart person having an intelligent debate with somebody like Marsha Blackburn or Ken Ham whose ideology is hostile to science and empirical research and actually considers them to be the spawn of Satan could be rather difficult, especially when I imagine that I would be struggling to avoid rolling my eyes and sighing uncontrollably at the willful ignorance of people like them.

(5,575 posts)He keeps things simple but accurate and when he hears something completely goofy his head does this little quiver thing. I haven't seen him attack anyone, he just responds with more science.

(27,787 posts)Absolutely buried him. And Christians who watched it (they are Ham's target audience) knew it, and said so.
He's never going to flip the crazies. He's trying to keep the average Christian from getting sucked into Ham and the Creationist insanity.
Send in some one more combative, and those average Christians will tune them out. Egg head know it alls. Nye explains things in an approachable and non-threatening manner. And that's why he wins with that audience. And those are the folks you don't want voting for the Creationist in the school board.

(4,593 posts)Nye does the opposite. I think he's a highly effective debater.

(13,340 posts)I think he comes off as enthusiastic and sympathetic. He tends not to impress a lot of very technical people, but honestly, we're not his target audience here. We're already convinced.
The folks who are likily to get sucked into Creationism aren't scientists. They are Christians with a rather limited knowledge of science.
Nye is non-threatening.

(5,575 posts)"And David Gregory, on those few occasions when he doesnt have the blank-eyed and dimwitted mien of a lobotomized sock puppet, has the worst case of both-sides-do-it-ism since that affliction killed David Broder.** This is not really the person you want moderating a debate where one side is science and the other is profit-driven bullshit.
