This website is a summary of the damage ALEC is doing to public schools. I found it very interesting, and it's user-friendly.

(22,651 posts)If they didn't have voucher money/federal/state money to profit off of, 'ALEC-gang' wouldn't give a shit about our schools.

(9,478 posts)ALEC bills include legislation for vouchers and online schools.
World Comparison: Wrong Direction
Top performing countries have strong PUBLIC systems. The OECD recommends ensuring that school choice programs do not become a back door for resegregation based on race or income.
4. ALEC policies close down schools
ALEC has proposals to close down and turn around schools, sometimes by bringing in special management to run them.
World Comparison: Wrong Direction
Closing schools has a terrible effect on students and can destabilize communities. The OECD recommends directing resources to the students with the greatest needs and providing a wide curriculum and educational alternatives to prevent dropouts.
5. ALEC has proposed creating a STEM (science, technology, education and math) education subcommittee with oil companies as members
Exxon, BP and Shell Oil were invited to serve as private sector members on the subcommittee. ALEC legislation already includes bills that would require teaching of corporate perspectives on climate change.
World Comparison: Wrong Direction
Rather than letting corporations make laboratories of our schools, countries that outperform us, like Canada, put money into encouraging local experimentation and innovation. This is recommended by the OECD.

they just say we should adapt because living without oil "is too hard". It would be nice if corporations would actually take an interest and be involved in public schools outside of career days. Not all that worried about industry indoctrinating kids; raising my own has shown me that you can't make someone think a certain way.

The beigger question is, is Exxon paying to stop climate change legislation from being passed?

(3,505 posts)It's also a little known fact that nearly all of the oil companies financed climate model studies back in the 1980s and 90s to help them explore for new oil reserves. These studies were actually quite accurate at predicting where reserves might be found. It was a side note that climate modelers stumbled upon the link between global CO2 levels and global temperatures while doing work for the oil industry. So in essence, the oil companies planted the seed of their own "destruction".
