Well, apparently not everyone likes tie dye parties...
This awful response to a child's birthday invitation is making its rounds on the Internet after a two gay dads living in Baldwin, N.Y., submitted it to their local radio station.
Originally posted on the K-98.3 Facebook page, the heartbreaking note allegedly written by a disapproving mother on an invite to a birthday party for a 7-year-old is certainly a testament to the work that still has to be done to overcome homophobia in our society.
The note reads: "Tommy will NOT attend. I do not believe in what you do and will not subject my innocent son to your "lifestyle." I'm sorry Sophia has to grow up this way. If you have an issue or need to speak to me: (number erased)"

(13,598 posts)The women who replied has given permission for her details not to be blocked, but they - very sensibly - presumably haven't.
On edit: you're right, I hadn't noticed that her details are also blocked. I've seen a version of this with them unblocked, and a note that she'd given permission for that, elsewhere on DU, though, so I don't know what's happened.

(9,527 posts)And because there are people who would call and harass the woman. Granted she needs a metaphorical smack upside the head, but there are people who would call her with death threats. I believe that there are not as many as would give the gay couple death threats, but there are assholes everywhere.

(15,224 posts)I fear little Tommy will grow up with much hate in his heart and that is very sad.
If the kids all go back to school on Monday and talk about what a GREAT time that they all had at the party, little Tommy may feel a little "left out", too.
Good grief. It's a party for seven year olds! Anyone who tries to make THAT about sex is seriously screwed up.

(38,506 posts)Teaching her kids to hate that early? I hope they grow up to be nice anyway, just to spite her. That'll screw up her head.

(20,043 posts)and feel so horrible for those kids growing up in that house.
You're not born with hate and bigotry in your heart, you're taught it--like this.
Hopefully when the kids grow up they won't be anything like their parents.

Poor Tommy. I hope he isn't gay, not with a mother like that.

(15,950 posts)Now, the entire incident has been revealed as a hoax drummed up by K-98.3's Steve Harper and his "Morning Show" co-host, Leeana. The two posted an apology note on the station's website Friday.
"This story was, in fact, totally fictitious, and created by the two of us. This was done without the knowledge of K-98.3 management or ownership," they wrote. "We were attempting to spur a healthy discourse on a highly passionate topic, but we made a mistake by misleading our listeners into thinking that this specific situation actually existed."
"We are very sorry that we perpetuated this falsehood, even after it was clear that it had taken on a 'life of its own,'" they concluded. "We deeply apologize for violating your trust, and we will work hard to regain that trust."
Critics took to the station's Facebook page to voice their anger over what is being called a shameless publicity stunt.
"Disgusting that you fabricated the Sophia Invitation story for ratings. SHAME ON YOU!" wrote one person. "What exactly did you think would happen making up a fake story like this? There is enough hate in this world. You just lost a loyal listener!" wrote another.

They should be fired. What was the point? The result will be for people to immediately not believe true incidents of hate. This makes me sick, not unlike the waitress incident.
Disgusting.
