and what it's all about is not easy.

Ostensibly, it's about Hafez Assad and then his son Bashir gassing their own people who disagree with them. Add to that, the merciless bombing of Syria by Bashir Assad trying to defeat the rebels. The images we see are proof of the horrific toll it has taken.

However, it's not as simple as it seems. Iran and other Middle East countries have their own agendas in Syria. The US and Russia, to name two, are countries who also have interest there. Part of this is economic and part of it is related to terrorism. Beyond that, gawd only knows what is going on that we don't know about. As far as I can tell, on one level, everybody seems to fight everybody else. On another level, there are shifting alliances that we have no clue about.

The reason depends on who you ask. Some will say it's about more freedom for people. Others will say it's to create a religious state (or not). Others will mention earlier atrocities that have to be avenged. Some of these are decades if not centuries old. They never forget these old wounds.

I have no idea how to untangle any of it. There are government backed forces and rebel groups. Some of the rebel groups are Al Qaeda and fundamentalist Islam. Others just want Assad gone so that Syria can thrive. They are backed by different countries and groups. Trying to figure out who to help and how is almost impossible.

The US and other countries have meddled in the Middle East for centuries. At times we have worked with brutal dictators and then turned on them when it suited our needs. That hasn't helped.

I look at pictures like this and it makes me angry and very sad. The only thing I know to do is to try to help those who help the refugees. This is a long nonanswer but it is what it is.
