If I hear one more person talk shit about "government is the problem" with this health care reform thing, I am going to spit fire. I went through the government website exchange, there were a few hiccups, but nothing the 800 number couldn't handle.
Dealing with the insurance companies themselves, on the other hand, has been a maddening disorganized CLUSTERFUCK from soup to nuts. On hold for four hours to ask one question, which can't get answered in the end because the very nice phone people don't know much of anything about the company they're working for (I tested one of them the other day by asking her to explain to me what a "deductible" is, and she couldn't, so beat that with a stick). Websites that say you're already a member but won't let you log in. Wife's company loses the COBRA paperwork while we're in transition, which cancelled our health care insurance for a time and confused the shit out of the insurance company. Again.
Government is the problem my ass. All the trouble I've had with this has come the second I come in contact with the holy and sainted private business. It's like running into a fence electrified with 50,000 volts of Fail. Fuck these people.
If you want to blame government, blame them for choosing to stay in bed with the insurance industry. Beyond that, shut the fuck up with "government is the problem." I've never seen so much rank and consistent incompetence in my life as I have since diving into the swamp of private for-profit health insurance.

(38,506 posts)Although pay in government jobs can sometimes be pretty low - I've worked for city and county governments and they pay clerks just above minimum - the insurance coverage helps back them up a lot. It's supposed to be pretty comprehensive. Also, I've always heard good things about Tri Care for the military.
We need to help people more, not less.
