Nestle USA is recalling 238,000 cases of its Hot Pockets pastries because they may contain meat included in a massive recall of nearly 9 million pounds of diseased and unsound beef products.
Three different sizes of Philly Steak and Cheese Hot Pockets and Hot Pockets Croissant Crust Philly Steak and Cheese products in the two-pack box are part of the voluntary recall issued Friday but announced on Tuesday.
Officials with the Nestle Prepared Foods Division said that the firm used meat produced by Rancho Feeding Corp. in 2013. Last week, the Petaluma, Calif., plant recalled 8.7 million pounds of beef parts, including whole carcasses and heads, feet, livers and so-called mountain oysters, among other items.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service officials said the meat was recalled because the firm processed diseased and unsound animals without benefit of full inspection. The plant voluntarily closed last week and FSIS officials are conducting an intensive investigation of its processes and products.

(8,361 posts)of course, after seeing Jim Gaffigan's routine, that is the ONLY think of when I hear something about Hot Pockets. I literally laugh when I pass them in the frozen food aisle.

(10,044 posts)they weren't bad.
Now profits are more important, and better products cost more, and CEO's are in competition to see who is the richest I think.

(19,847 posts)As a single guy years ago I wound up eating them a lot but Gaffigan's line about (recalling from memory now) nobody ever saying 'I'm glad I ate that Hotpocket' was true from the beginning.

(17,742 posts)Meat that has been distributed for the past YEAR is being "recalled." Uh... ok...
Sounds like someone is worried about Mad Cow. I have almost no doubt I've eaten some of that beef.

(10,044 posts)I buy Angus beef, and it was so good until several months ago. If it's not Angus, even if it's 99% lean, it is tasteless, and even Angus isn't hitting the mark anymore. And the lousy ground meat isn't cheap, either. Cheapest is well over $3 a pound and cooked, you get about half or less. Lean Angus is over $5.00.
No wonder McDonald's radiates all its meat and uses a seasoning that makes every burger taste the same...at least that's what I heard.
Last week I picked up some Hot Pockets for my son's home as a quick pickmeup after hockey or on his day off. I usually buy the Pepperoni Pizza...today they didn't have any when I went to the store...so glad I didn't buy ANY kind after reading this. He's going to have to switch to grilled cheese... Even eggs don't taste the same unless you get the more expensive free range brands.
Hot Pockets are so handy for young people..I don't care for them at all.
Thank you for posting

(10,820 posts)I get all my beef from a boyhood buddy who is now an organic farmer/rancher. He and his partner in the venture are fanatics about natural farming. The beef is grass fed Angus and it is delicious. I brought some of their ground beef to a group cookout and the difference in color and texture was amazing when put next to store bought meat. The others at the cookout all noticed as well. Even uncooked the all natural grass fed beef had a different smell than the store bought.

(20,600 posts)I see I am not the only one who had them recently. I didn't notice anything wrong with the taste at the time. I do believe Hot Pockets has some explaining to do.
