Key lawyer in the Christie bridge scandal withdraws as counsel to the Port Authority.

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2014/02/bridge_scandal_lawyer_for_christie_withdraws_as_port_authoritys_counsel_in_outside_lawsuit_observers.html

In an unexpected move, the lawyer for Gov. Chris Christie’s office in the George Washington Bridge scandal withdrew this week as counsel to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in an ongoing federal lawsuit, setting off speculation about what it means and why he did it.

Randy Mastro, a head litigation partner of the law firm of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, represents the governor’s office in the bridge scandal and other controversies tied to Hurricane Sandy aid. At the same time, he had served for more than a year as a lead attorney for the Port Authority in a federal lawsuit focused on controversial toll hikes.

Christie hired Mastro in January after the disclosure of emails showing that a Christie aide allegedly orchestrated a four-day closure of two local-access lanes to the bridge, causing massive traffic jams in Fort Lee. Many suspect the closures were retaliation after the borough’s Democratic mayor didn’t endorse the Republican governor for re-election.

In recent weeks, some attorneys and legal observers had expressed concern about Mastro’s dual role, especially because Mastro’s duties for Christie include his firm assisting with an internal review of the governor’s office’s actions, including events tied to the Port Authority.

the Port Authority, just not on this matter anymore. So, you know, its O.K. The conflicts of interest are incredible. A solo practitioner in my town did something that pales in comparison (still wasn't right) and got suspended from the practice of law. These guys engage in this behavior with impunity. Even after withdrawing in this matter, he still has an attorney-client relationship with the Port Authority and all the access to information that this implies.

Did it stink so bad even Mastro couldn't stand the smell?

Is he saving his ass and getting out while the getting is good?

And if he had to choose, he chose representing christie over representing the Port Authority. Suggests where his strongest loyalties lie. Maybe he thinks christie's chances of wriggling out of this are strong, so he's placing his bets that way? Wonder what the pay scale is? And who's paying for christie's defense? The taxpayers? Well, they're a bottomless pit of money, anyway. Especially those chumps who still believe in him.

remember our friend Nicole Crifo from the original e-mail release? Well, she got herself a new spot at the Port Authority making $184,000/yr based upon her skills scrutinizing the minutes of the authorities. Really? Well one way to keep your underlings from turning on you is to give them lucrative jobs. The Star Ledger article is agnostic about whether Nicole Crifo is the Nicole in the emails, but this source says the email Nicole is Nicole Crifo.

Nicole Crifo
Legal Advisor to Authorities Unit
September 23, 2013
Nicole Crifo (and Bridget Kelly) are forwarded State Senator Loretta Weinberg's letter expressing concerns about the closures. On November 25, after Bill Baroni testifies before the Assembly, David Wildstein texts Bill Baroni, "I have only texted bridget and Nicole they were VERY happy." On November 30, Bill Baroni texts "Can u check your gmail and make sure Nicole has all that."

that its her. She attended all of the Port Authority meetings. She worked in the authorities unit. Her only job was to review minutes and report back on what was going on at the public hearings she was assigned to attend. For anyone that doesn't have a life (and I'm afraid that I need to include myself in there right now ) you can review Baroni's testimony here:

I see a couple of people I know in the audience, but I don't see either Nicole or Bridget Kelly. It's hard because you only get a look at the left hand side of the room. Have some patience. Baroni's testimony really gets sketchy about 25-30 minutes in. After Kwon's preparation wore off no doubt. Kwons in the third row, right hand side, wearing the green & black striped tie. Darryl Isherwood from the Ledger is in the front row left in the grey sport jacket.

Check out how he has stats on how many drivers from each committee member's district had to "unfairly sit in traffic so Fort Lee could get their lanes"! What a clever trick. Lookest over there. Aha! madest thou look.

till Christie's toast, or will he wiggle out of all of it somehow?

I'm a little nervous now that it's all mostly background noise. I remember when we were depending on another Federal prosecutor who let us down.

A lot depends on how much the U.S. Attorney's office keeps digging. NJ is actually one of the more difficult state's to get away with corrupt activities. It's one of the reasons why we know so much about what's going on. I still believe that the bridge will only be the tip of the iceberg and that one or more of the other incidents will prove his undoing. The other thing is I don't see any agency going going through this effort and expense to merely embarrass Christie or to send send Bridget Kelly to jail for 6 months. I also think the assembly will impeach him (provided there's nothing that turns up that will prove damaging or incriminating for Christie's democratic buddies). The head of the judiciary committee is an honest straight forward guy who has been on the receiving end of some of Christie's nastier tantrums. He's not under Norcross' influence. I'm reasonably certain that given the chance he'll take Christie down.

Plus there's always a pissed-off Wildstein with a very dangerous lawyer.

In bridge scandal, one lawyer could topple Christie

And Christie will find no comfort in Zegas, who has battled him in court, accused him of playing politics with criminal prosecutions and written scathing op-eds about his attacks on judicial independence, once comparing him to King George III of England.

“I don’t know Mr. Wildstein, but he seems wily, so it’s possible he was sending a message to the governor, that I’m going to choose someone you might not like,” said Nancy Erika Smith, an employment lawyer and friend of Zegas. “Sometimes lawyers just act and don’t think. Alan plays chess.”
