(9,478 posts)RALEIGH Gov. Pat McCrory on Friday evening announced he was replacing all members of the State Board of Elections. The appointments take effect Wednesday just as an investigation into political contributions made to McCrory and other top Republicans campaigns is getting underway.
Three Republicans and two Democrats will replace the current three-Democrat, two-Republican board. The boards majority represents the governors party.
The move puts the progress of the boards investigation into campaign contributions from an indicted sweepstakes software company owner in question.
Bob Hall, executive director of Democracy North Carolina, last week asked the board to investigate more than 60 campaign contributions totaling more than $230,000. Some of the contributions went to McCrory, House Speaker Thom Tillis and Senate leader Phil Berger.
A majority of sitting board members said they were interested in investigating, according to an Associated Press story. But on Friday night, Chairman Larry Leake said it would be inappropriate for members on their last day in office to talk about the investigation or give staff any direction. The board has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday

(19,841 posts)Virginia will have to address this disaster also:
"The river's flow has carried the ash to within 10 miles of Virginia's Kerr Reservoir, the last stop on the way to Lake Gaston, which provides drinking water for more than a million people in South Hampton Roads.
Cleaning up so much of the river will be impossible, especially now that the toxins have settled into the riverbed from bank to bank for miles upon miles.
The spill at the Dan River Steam Station is undoubtedly among North Carolina's worst environmental accidents. It dumped 82,000 tons of coal ash and 27 million gallons of contaminated water into the river. It is the third largest coal ash spill in American history.
The state's reckless response to the spill is its own scandal."

(2,419 posts)this evening, including two from North Carolina. I didn't expect to meet anybody from NC at this event, but there they were. They were quite certain that the Duke Power connections were going to bring McCrory down. I found their confidence quite encouraging. Hey NC folks, are they on the right track or is it just wishful thinking? They thought the criminal investigation into the ash spill was going to have legs. (this was an issue they have been working on for some time so they have an emotional investment) Does this really have potential?

(2,419 posts)Perhaps things are starting to sink in in North Carolina:
The increasingly disingenuous McCrory Administration
The public may not be paying attention to all the details of the coal ash story or who filed which lawsuit. They may not have considered the slim file of accomplishments of a well-connected political appointee who was paid $310,000 of public money for less than a years work.
But they know somethings up in Raleigh these days. The latest Elon University Poll finds McCrorys approval rating mired in the mid 30snoticeably lower than President Obamas approval and he is being attacked in ads every day by folks trying to keep Senator Kay Hagan from winning reelection.

Duke Energy Caught Dumping Toxic Wastewater into Cape Fear River Watershed
The arrogant criminality of Duke Energy continues unabated in spite of federal investigations and continuing revelations of political corruption. The Waterkeeper Alliance has released aerial surveillance photos to media outlets across the state. These photos, taken from a fixed-wing aircraft last week, show Duke Energy employees pumping waste-water from two of Duke Energys toxic coal ash lagoons into a canal that drains into the Cape Fear River.
These continuing and knowing acts of pollution come less than two months after the Dan River disaster, where at least 30,000 tons of coal ash spilled from another of Duke Energys toxic coal ash lagoons. The dumping also came just days before a federal grand jury convenes in Raleigh to hear evidence in a criminal investigation of Duke Energy, the NC Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the handling of coal ash.

Environmental groups trying to sue Duke Energy were stopped by the state regulators (all hired by McCrory), who instead settled with Duke via wrist-slap fines and no obligation to clean up the mess:
http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/watch/energy-company-caught-pumping-from-toxic-pond-198485059921
After being stopped by sheriff's deputies when they tried to sail toward the closed Duke plant, they took to the air:

And now the regulators are having second thoughts about the lawsuit settlements!

(44,583 posts)DENR has created this external portal in an effort to respond to public record requests regarding coal ash. This portal will provide access to public records specifically concerning coal ash, including documents provided to third parties in relation to pending coal ash civil litigation. We have created the portal with a limited search function to allow requesters access to search document contents. All content imported into the portal is being provided in a form as close to the form that it was initially provided to third parties during the pending coal ash civil litigation. The contents of this portal will continue to be updated with additional documents as these documents are located and imported into this portal.
