...for so many reasonsThe dream of a former caretaker at the Franklin Zoo in New Zealand is finally being realized with the sweet introduction of two elephants, Mila and Mary.
Mila, who is now 41, has spent almost her entire life alone. She was born in Namibia in 1973 and, like many others who find themselves in captivity, was taken from her home and her family shortly after.
Mary is the first elephant Mila has seen in 37 years.

(22,666 posts)I can't stand to see animals used for human profit and entertainment. They are no less deserving of living a decent life for themselves than we are. Who are humans to take that away from them?
We are brutal tyrants. The animals, who live simply and in cooperation with nature, are so much better than us.

(37,549 posts)The Philly Zoo had a horribly small exhibit, and when the elephants were in the pool, they were very close to the people. One day, I was standing there holding my daughter, and an elephant stretched her trunk and grasped her foot. Played with it a bit, snorted. I asked one of the keepers the elephant's name, and she told me, reluctantly.

(33,982 posts)I look at all zoos with increasing suspicion.
Which sucks because I want my kid to have that experience of actually seeing some of these far-flung animals, right here easily accessible but...
I can't pretend they are anything other than prisoners anymore.

(793 posts)I saw this great thing between an elephant and a lab. Then I checked out Utube. and it was there and it is down in Myrtle Beach. Try out "Bubbles and Bella". both are photogenic as all get out.
