What's with the death and gloom in every subject line? Every email I receive -- and I receive a lot of them -- has a subject line saying "DEVASTATING DEFEAT!" "WE'RE DOOMED!" "TOTAL EPIC FAILURE!" "THIS IS THE END!" "ALL HOPE IS LOST!"
I work in political advertising. Specializing in NEGATIVE political advertising, to be exact, which makes it all the more ironic that I find these emails so offensive. Lighten the f**k up! I don't even bother to click on the sensationalist headlines anymore because I know we really didn't suffer some devastating defeat or epic failure.
The epic failure is your email messaging. Work on it. Give me a call if you'd like some help...I've won 27 Pollie and Reed awards doing this stuff.

(31,464 posts)These emails are ridiculous! Democrats will never again have a say in the legislative process because Bill O'Reilly didn't like the dress Michelle wore to a kindergarten fitness rally yesterday! If you you don't send us $3 by midnight, a Republican comet will strike the earth -- but only Blue States -- and envelop us in a Koch-fueled nuclear winter!!! Come on...I get fund raising, believe me, but these guys are shooting themselves in their own feet.

(20,277 posts)I finally dumped the address in the junk file so I don't have to bother with the gloomy crap.

(67,112 posts)my unread/delete folders. It's pervasive. If the democratic party is in that bad shape with all of this doom and gloom, seems we've already lost everything. The net/net is they will receive a defensive/rejection reaction from many thus failing in their advertising objective. Bottom line, they are stupid emails!

(31,464 posts)It's hard to keep up with the email addresses. I never even open the "politics" folder, just send then to the trash.

(3,577 posts)There's a small link at the bottom of every message. And tell them why.

(31,464 posts)It's bullshit. If you click it, it just confirms that you are a valid subscriber reading their emails.

(20,277 posts)I did that a few times and it made the situation worse.

(22,845 posts)It seems like every day they want MORE money for every little issue that's going to DESTROY LIFE AS WE KNOW IT.
You are quite right that negative political advertising doesn't work.
Positive political ads that focus on the possible are the ones that win, and I'm saying this as someone who worked as a newspaper reporter for many years.

(31,464 posts)They never leave a message, but they never actually block their calls...caller ID says "Washington DC" or "DC." How stupid do they think we are that we'd answer this? I think if President Obama was calling my cell phone it might say "White House" or "The Big Guy" or something...not "DC."

(31,464 posts)Wed love nothing more than to kick off this election year handing Boehner a humiliating loss on Republicans home turf. But, to be frank, the Republicans are spending the kind of money that could put a Democratic victory out of reach. Theres still time to catch up (and win a historic victory!) but we HAVE to close this $548,000 spending gap before our final week ad buy deadline."
The one sent two minutes before this one says that my "membership" will expire at midnight if I don't send $3 immediately. Of course, my "membership" never seems to expire, and I just get more emails.

(67,112 posts)election and it was my fault. Crap like that does not work on me, my reaction is just "F you!" I can't for sure recall if it was specifically for Obama or a local candidate, but the message was the same.

(94,964 posts)...given all the tools of social media, every campaign falls back to mimeographed fundraising emails that never stray from the following:
1) "I just left a meeting with my Finance Director, and we're only $XXX away from our goal....."
2) "The (Koch Brothers/Karl Rove/Evil Republican of your choice) are at it again..."
3) "Did you hear what my opponent said? Contribute to our campaign to send a message that you oppose....."
4) (to your point): "There's really bad news: in the latest (poll/Republican House Bill/evil vote suppression tactic), we're facing a loss of (Senate control/House seats/The White House)..."

(30,151 posts)FW: this could make the difference
Snooper-- well be quick:
With just 24 hours to go before the most important deadline yet, we are still $2,100 short of our $9,000 goal.
Snooper, we dont have the luxury our opponents have, where Super PACs and outside groups can spend millions on their behalf so far out from the election.
Our success depends on support from folks like you. Will you help Pete close the gap before tomorrows midnight deadline?
Please chip in $3 or more to help Pete reach his $9,000 goal before midnight tomorrow >>

This could make the difference:
One week from today, well learn which Republican challenger Im going to face off with in November.
Already, extremist outside groups funded by the Koch brothers have spent hundreds-of-thousands of dollars on TV against me. Once the primary is over, you can be sure theyll increase their attacks even more.
Snooper, Im committed to keep fighting for you every day. Im committed to working for the Texas families and communities I represent both in 2014 and beyond. But we must be prepared for the road ahead.
Weve set a big goal this month: $9,000. It represents the 9 hours it takes to drive from one end of the district to the other. I hope youll help us get there.
