Meanwhile - sounds like the "legislative fix" will be pretty limited.
Indiana RFRA deal sets limited protections for LGBT

Indiana Republican leaders are vetting the language with business leaders.
Indiana Republican leaders are vetting a deal with key business leaders that grants protection for gay and lesbian residents from the state's controversial "religious freedom" law.
A copy of the language obtained by The Indianapolis Star was being presented to Gov. Mike Pence Wednesday morning. The measure would specify that the new religious freedom law cannot be used as a legal defense to discriminate against residents based on their sexual orientation.
The measure goes much further than a "preamble" that was proposed earlier in the week, explaining exactly what the RFRA law does. But it doesn't go as far as establishing gays and lesbians as a protected class of citizens or repealing the law outright, both things that Republican leaders have said they could not support.

(48,955 posts)the senate has had a supermajority for a long time (much of it business conservatives) - but the teaparty fomentation that led to pushing this law... keeps them pushing at the edges.
The question is what the reaction will be - they and the gov clearly didn't expect this reaction. And will the reaction make them retreat further (and to them that is what the "fix" is - a teaparty retreat.)
I think they may be forced to get to adding protected class status. But they aren't going to do it willingly.

(36,224 posts)The answer is because they don't believe that LGBT deserve protection against discrimination.
And if it isn't put into law, then legally they cannot be discriminated against.
That is why Mike Pence kept saying the RFRA does not condone discrimination. Not because he despises discrimination.
The question needs to be asked of them, repeatedly.

(48,955 posts)"Consulation Prize" in the wake of the overturning of the gay-marriage ban.
Get your question - and I agree - as I don't think their "fix" will go far enough. Unless they keep being asked - and the outrage continues. And they are forced.
Than this may have backfired rather nicely

(9,154 posts)Who would be considered a non-resident?
(1) temporary employment;
(2) educational purposes; or
(3) other purposes;
without the intent of making a permanent home in the precinct.

(9,154 posts)What a way to destroy education in some minority folks' minds.
It would be difficult to distinguish a university student from someone else, except for the staff of the university itself, so this is protecting educational establishments right to discriminate. Same goes for temporary employees. Who would know other than the boss? "Other purposes" is rather broad, so folks traveling through Indiana spending their money would not be protected.

(48,955 posts)The intent was to lower voter turnout among those who are more likely to vote for democratic candidates - and young educated voters fit that description. This isn't about giving protection to one group (I know you are being facetious... I think) - but it is about bigger attempts to disenfranchise voters. And look - they just got a supermajority in the state house in November - after record Low voter turnout!
The hatred is coming from the State House - towards voters and citizens.
