Staten Island cops are being forced to participate in a new NYPD quota game in which they get points for each arrest they make, it was revealed Tuesday.
But if they dont make an arrest in a certain time period, they stand to lose more than the game, critics claim.
A dry-erase board posted inside the Anti-Crime Unit office in the 122nd Precinct stationhouse in New Dorp shows that anti-crime cops are given one point for every misdemeanor arrest they make and 1.5 points for every felony arrest.
Cops in the command are required to get three points a month, according to Anthony Miranda, chairman of the National Latino Officers Association, which obtained a photo of the dry-erase board. If they dont, then they are given a negative number, which accrues from month to month.
The more negative numbers an anti-crime cop has, the more likely he will get booted from the command, Miranda explained.
They are assigning points as if theyre playing a game, Miranda said Tuesday outside NYPD headquarters in lower Manhattan. They force officers to compete with each other to mandate arrests in our communities.
This quota challenge is already being replicated in other commands, Miranda warned.
These guys make up these systems and they are easy to duplicate in other commands, but its illegal to begin with.
No one wants negative numbers, so cops scramble to make their three points a month...thats when discretion goes out the window, Miranda said. The greatest power police officers have is the discretionary ability to do things. If you take that away, abusive practices start coming out.
The NYPD was quick to shoot down Mirandas quota allegations.
There are no numerical enforcement quotas established by the NYPD, Police Department spokesman Stephen Davis said in a statement. Performance evaluations are conducted for all department employees based on an assessment of their duties, responsibilities and specific conditions of their assignments.
