Trevor Noah defends self in backlash to old tweets

Trevor Noah, the newly announced host of "The Daily Show," rejected the backlash over his graphic tweets targeting Jews and women as an unfair reflection of him and his comedy.

"To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn't land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian," Noah posted Tuesday on his Twitter account, the same one that included past tweets others deemed offensive.

Comedy Central also came to his defense, calling Noah a "provocative" comedian who "spares no one, himself included."

"To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair," the network said in a statement, adding that he has "a bright future at Comedy Central."

Some people can't stand to see a black man run the Daily Show.

I read one article that complained that he used "they" when referring to Americans. Numerous places complaining about how he doesn't have a deep understanding of American political issues (if I remember correctly, neither did Colbert or Stewart when they started).

I don't know much about the guy, but it is somewhat unsettling to see some of the underlying bigotry in the attacks on him.

And you can see this issue coming up on his first show. And I'm sure the writers will be super and his delivery will be first rate. I'm a fan and happy to give him a chance. That handful of jokes may have been tasteless, and they may have landed flat. But there was no hate in them, no misogyny. At least to this white former Jew's middle aged ears.

has likely been guilty of even tackier "jokes" that didn't land.

Personally, I thought those outrageously offensive tweets were mild stuff, but then I grew up in the 1950s, the absolute nadir of respect for anything female.

Just knock it off, already. He's a PC choirboy compared to most of the comedians out there.
