they claim the media accuses any white person who says they are proud of being white of being a racist, but other colors can say they are proud and are not accused of such. Aside from not being able to provide me with examples of this happening, they don't seem to grasp the fact that because a non-white segment of the American population asserts their right to be treated equally under the law it doesn't lessen their own rights (boy that's a cumbersome sentence ).
Mostly I'm posting this I guess to solicit examples of ingrained institutional racism which I think they are showing with their remarks. Suggestions?

(12,504 posts)when the most gorgeous person in a decade complains they are not so beautiful and in fact they are having a bad hair day, their teeth need whitening and they are wearing last years' couture, and then the most unfortunate looking person in the last decade says that even with their lopsided looks and crooked spine they are so blessed......who's comments seem to be more authentic? Who's comments comes from life filled with the real difficulties and struggles?

(18,497 posts)It is a rather pointless thing to say.
Taking pride in a specific heritage like Irish or German or Scottish or whatever is another thing entirely with things like parades and festivals and celebrations.
But just to be proud to be white?

Caucasian race (also Caucasoid[1] or Europid[2]) has historically been used to describe the physical or biological type of some or all of the populations of Europe, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, Western Asia, Central Asia, and South Asia.[3] The term was used in biological anthropology for many people from these regions, without regard necessarily to skin tone.[4] First introduced in early racial science and anthropometry, the taxon has historically been used to denote one of the proposed major races of humankind.[5] Although its validity and utility is disputed by many anthropologists, Caucasoid as a biological classification remains in use,[6] particularly within the field of forensic anthropology.[5]

(31,849 posts)white folks proclaiming that they are proud to be white are saying something entirely different from what the PoC means when they proclaim their racial/ethnic pride ... the former tends to be exclusionary and outwardly messaged; whereas, the latter is a statement of self-worth and inwardly messaged.
Further, I suspect these discussions are made up ... I doubt your nephew has heard any Black person say the phrase "Black Power" or "Black is Beautiful", or those other famously, "not-said-in-4-decades-by-Black-folks", words "Honkie" and "Cracker."
ETA: I suspect, if it hasn't already done so, the discussion will soon travel the "Why is there a Black Congressional Caucus or a Black Entertainment Television or Black History Month or ...?" path.

(15,596 posts)but I've had that discussion with other people who cannot understand that every month in American is White Entertainment Month, that when there is a HUGE percentage (cause I don't know the number off the top of my head) of white congressional people there is no need for a White Congressional Caucus etc just as you said.
I think it's just young kids trying to understand life in the 21st century and I don't know that they get any direction or guidance from the adults in their lives and many of them don't know a thing about Selma, Goodman, Schwerner and Chaney , Bull Connors, Lester Maddox, et al.
The most many young white kids know about Dr. King is there is now a day off in January named for him. They have NO IDEA what he did and who he worked with. They, rather I should say we, are worse off for that................

My own beloved grandfather was that sort, he couldn't believe I was marrying, in his own words, "a Mexican Girl" which was simply not done in his Older White California, and he boycotted our wedding.
To his credit he got over that,
