Porn belongs in the classroom, says Danish professor

[link orn belongs in the classroom, says Danish professor|The Guardian]:

A leading sexologist in Denmark has called for pornography to be shown in the classroom, claiming that starting a debate about the industry could help teenagers become “conscientious and critical consumers” who are able to tell the difference between pornography and the reality of sexual relationships.

Prof Christian Graugaard of Aalborg University caused a furore in Denmark when he suggested on public television that pornography should be shown in schools. This was preferable, he told the Danish public broadcaster DR, to sex education classes that were “boring and technical, where you roll a condom onto a cucumber”.

Graugaard’s proposal is not simply following in the long tradition of sexually permissive Scandinavia. It is, he insists, a sensible way of teaching teenagers that pornography is nothing like real sex.

“My proposal is to critically discuss pornography with 8th and 9th graders [age 15 – the legal age of consent in Denmark – and 16 respectively] as part of a sensible didactic strategy, carried out by trained teachers,” he told the Guardian.

I've subscribed to the Guardian in anticipation of the UK election, and I'm finding their coverage very...wide-ranging.

Show 'reality tv' and movies like 'American Sniper' and 'Zero Dark Thirty' in classrooms and engage in critical thought to show how they veer from reality and into propaganda.

Amazing how some people are shocked about depictions of sex but have no problem with gun violence and constant war.

The Psychology and Biology of Human Sexuality at the University of Rochester back in the early 1970's, they showed us porn films in recitation…both "commercial" and "medical research" including, I suppose, Kinsey-esque films of female orgasm, penetration, etc. Wild times…we were floored as students. Sort of a --gulp-- moment in our young lives.

If we are to get control of our sexuality, we must demystify it and become informed about ourselves. And the sooner the better, this notion that children cannot handle the facts is bullshit, what children cannot handle is parents that freak out when the subject comes up.

Within the construct of age appropriateness. Not everything is always clear cut, however it can and should be not all that difficult to figure out.

Which relates to the age issue.

But all of this is much more workable if you can talk about it candidly.

I suppose to a degree the devil is in the details and again allowances must be made for individuals at different stages of being able to grasp what is being presented, but it can be done.

On a different topic, I was having a email exchange with a friend discussing funding one's retirement and household budgets. We were both discussing our amazement in conversations we had through the years with co-workers immersed in their present day worlds, just figured things would take care of themselves and getting to their golden years found out that was not the case.

I believe that our education system needs some serious changes to deal with necessary life skills and both of these need to be opening and throughly discussed along the way as children move through the system.

That ties in, does it not?

I remember in my early 20s being sort of stunned at how little I knew about the predatory US business model and how little the egalitarian and fair economic dogmas I was fed in school were observed in real life.

And parenting, Good Lord, we need to teach people how to be effective, empowering parents.
